The management is to be In the hands of .well known Southern mill men, though the scheme is financed by a New York trust company. Tec He view is of the opinion that, there wiij be no skyrocketing, but “the affairs of the corporation will be conducted along conservative and. progressive lines." The nmeli-taiked-of Under wood merger, which m-as to be a $60,- <IOO.OOO combine, failed of realization, but few' southern mills consenting to enter it. There has been a good deal of harmonious coupe ration of south ern mills for some time, to promote their common interests, but consolida tion is anew step. WU REALLY GOING. So Minister Wu is really going to leave us. When the announcement of tho appointment of his successor came a few months ago, it was said that at least he would remain with us until next spring, but the edict made public yesterday seems to be peremptory and within a month he will bo off. He will be truly missed. Wu was permitted to remain in this country longer than ihe average Chi nese Minister and he so used his time as to acquire a unique place In our hearts. Tho value of foreign travel lies chiefly in the fact that distinc tions between (he home and foreign Customs are forced upon the traveler. He is placed on the defensive, com pelled io make comparisons and weigh value, so that his final conclusions are apt. to have a ’deeper basis in truth than are those of tno man who stays at homo. Minister Wu came here from a country that nas many more points* of dissimilarity (ban of .similarity with our own. tie was a keen observer and a traijk-Rpoken critic, though bis criticisms were al ways freed of offense by the saving quality of humor. Seeing things from the foreign standpoint, bis conclu sions often exposed to pur-wight the truth about things hidden from ns by the haze of familiarity. There was that conversation of his with a repub lican loader in New York state, for instance. “Are you a Platt; man?" he asked. "I am.” "Do you do every thing lie.tells you?” “Most, every thing.” “Then you are his slave, are you not?’ It was true, but wo had not quite looked at it in that way un til Minister Wu showed it to us. His remarks on lynch Inga, too, were en lightening. "The United Stales and China are twin nations,” lie said, in effect. "Wo have the Boxers and you have the lynchers.” And again: "What a queer country you have! You exeludo the Chinese nut you ad mit. the anarchists.” Yes, Wu is wiinc tniug of a logician. We shall all he sorry to see him go and glad to know that he is to be highly honored in lilft own land. More than that, he has promised to write a book about us. That, it will he await ed with Interest is no publisher’s an nouncement. THE CITY COURT QUESTION. For some time the people of this city have been dealing with the < ity court proposition, in other words- the abolition of that tribunal, it. seems, has lieu a discordant issue in the lo cal political situation. The News does not propose, qt. this stage of the game, to say what iS’best, In its opinion, for tho community. However, it feels that some discussion of ibis motod question may throw light in certain quarters. In the first place, as a whole, we are not opposed to the city court, but we do think that the law under which this court was created might be amended with amicable results. To start with, it is our opinion Unit the jurors serving iu the city court should ho paid two dollars per diem, the amount received for a like ser vice iu the Superior court. Again, wo feci that the salary at taching to the office of the judge of the city court of Brunswick is rather ex'horhitant and we would suggest that it bo reduced from fifteen hundred dollars to, say, one thousand dollars per annum. Another clause in the charter of Hie fourt to which we except is that*one provision of which (tonics the accused indictment by the grand jury of his county. Under the operation of the present -law, the solicitor of the city court is empowered with more authority than should bo vested in one individual. If ho so desires ho could work hard ships on most any citizen, who in the slightest fashion had transgressed. So far as the city court is concern ed there seems to be but little, if any real objection to it among our people, and for our part, with the amend ments we have suggested above, we know of no kick to he made against tho court If those of our poffple who favor the abolition of the city court will stop to consider they will find many rea ■ THE BRUNSWICK DAILY NEWS. sons why such a drastic measure should not prevail. It will take a number of years to enact laws providing for the succes sor to the city court, and during this period we will-have absolute# noth ing in the way of an intermediary*tS buna-1 as between the Justice court and the superior court. We are interceding in the cause of those who are opposed to or those who are in favorjef the city court, but we feel thht such statement, that we have made is justly due for the pub lic. *= —***—*'— ■ i ■ ■ . i J.
