A LESSON FOR DEMOCRACY. . There i* a healthy lesson for de mocracy in the result of the election of Tuesday. It is a lesson which, If properly heeded will mean the re claiming of the country by the demo cratic party. In every state in the union, where the democracy was united and made a comtiined and determined fight against republicanism and' plutocracy, democratic gains were reported in New York state me democcratie vote was a reminder of the gone-by days, when the party in that state controll ed Its polities. It demonstrated what can be accomplished by a united ef fort arid those who study the returns are free in lae expressions of surprise. When the campaign first opened there was hardly a semblance cf a chance for Color, the democratic none inee for governor. Odell pad given the state the best republican adminis tration th state lias ever known and had nearly succeeded In redeeming all the pledges his party had made. Bill despite tnls recognled fact the united efforts of democracy came very near capturing the state. In New York state democracy was united. In that state tremendous gains were nut le. Hut let us look at. Ohio, where Tom Johnson was conducting such a stren uous campaign and making such a bitter light. Tom Johnson is a good democrat. In fact lie is one of the best in I lie country, but he made his mistake In attacking McLean, of Cin cinnati. a man whose democracy Isas pure ns that of Mr. Johnson. The fight In Ohio was not a united one. There vas a flash of the local politi cal Interests so far as democracy was concerned and the result Is just con trary to that of New York. These two states offered food for study to the democrats. The lesson is one which would not be overlook ed. It means that If the democrats unite n 1904 they will succeed in electing their candidate for president. HOW THE REPUBLICANS WON. In Tuesday's election the protected industries and the trusts which have grown under the protective policy put forth their whole strength and the whole strength of the government to crush the political representatives ol tariff reform. Yet, in spite of their utmost efforts, it is evident mat popu lar sentiment In favor of conservative and equitable tariff revision in In creasing In eerfain sections of Inc east, that ground has been gained by the friends of this reform and that an Important breach has been made In the walls of the fortress of protec tion. The gains would probably have been much greater had not me repub lican party, in such slates as Imva, put itself on the side of tariff revision, anil so spiked the guns ot its oppo nents, and had not tno president and other republican leaders virtually con ceded the need of stick revision, and intimated their willingness to aid in the work under certain conditions tad within proper limitations. There is. then, on the whole, good ground for encouragement In the general sit - uatlotf for those who feel that the welfare of the county as well ns prin ciples of justice are Involved In the proper settlement of tins great eco nomic question. It is to oe hoped that the people of tiiis city will not pass up the splendid opportunity offered by the American Cigar Company for toe esiaiilfshmctu of one ot their branch factories in 1 his city. Factories are generally the very life of a community anil in this case we need it and should have it by all manner of means.
