The I'rofenttioiuif Jokriuaker. The ability to see things from a joke smith's peculiar viewpoint is not gen ius, but merely a kind of mental stra bismus. We do not get our material by inspiration, but by theft, assault and battery and otherwise. A solemn, hon est, peace loving commonalty is grabbed, thrown down, turned inside out and reconstructed Into an absurd ity. A feeble, hoary headed idea is ruthlessly set upon, crippled, torn to pieces, put together backward, with a new tall or head on it. The king’s English is deliberately murdered, all for a joke. Then, too, everything is funny, if you only think so. If we are city people, how hilarious the knob kneed rum list, and if we live in the country tmw mirth provoking we find tin l summer boarder, says a writer In the Bookman. All fads are ridiculous to everybody who is not devoted to them. Every man is a crank but me. Politics, society, till avocations but mine, d< tit. death, the law. prison, pain, poverty, facial and racial peculiarities, oilier people's hopes ami fears, prunes, the inhabitants of till other communi ties, flu* recently rich, the suffering poor, the bald, the baby, the obituary, the ministry, the hangman, the tiirt, the tight, the fit, the mule, the debu tante, the Hying machine, the under taker. the poet, the boll, the volcano, love, charity, whiskers, war. pestilence, famine, the unloaded shotgun all are very, very funny. ll*,vv the ll*>ll> Protects Itself. To effectively appreciate the protec tive element of the holly it must lie seen in its wild state, where Its foliage grows thick and bushy down to the ground, its dense masses of strong and prickly leaves protecting its stem and hark. And it should be observed tlmt almost invariably It grows alone; in fact, for some distance round about it. very little vegetation of consequence is seen, unless it is large trees. Why is this? The closely packed, opaque and coriaceous leaves of tin* holly prevent the sunlight reaching the ground, and so the seeds have little or no opportuni ty of germinating or of growing after ward If they should. And even elilnb lug plants seldom select Ihc holly as their host, and those that do are usu ally plants that have made a mistake in life, because the tender green leaves and s' cuts with strong- winds and rain get Jostled and lacerated on the Innu merable prickles among which they have become hopelessly involved as the holly and their own hr- itches have developed. And being an evergreen, al ways on the alert, it gives no other en terprising plant an opportunity of m gross; producing, too, its tender green leaves at a time when there is abun dant food for browsing* animals, and at the same time these are exceedingly bitter hi flavor. John J. Ward In Har per's Magazine. The Average AH Right, "Do they set a good table at your boarding house?” “Well, .he average Is good.” S , “What do yon mean by that?" v. “Why, the butter is strong and tlie coffee is weak, but if you consider them both together the average is sat isfactory.”- Chicago Rost. One day Sandy was late for his train for Bo’- ness, and the only way he could catch j his connection was by walking across I the line. A certain gentleman informed Sandy that it was useless for him to : attempt to cross by the railway, as , there was a watchman stationed at the camp bridge, who would allow no one to pass over it. "What sort o’ countryman is be?” in quired Satiny. “An Irishman," was the immediate rejoinder. “Well,” responded Sandy, "if lie is an Irishman I’ll get over.” And straight away he went. Coming up to the bridge. Sandy e> pied the Irishman coining out to stop him, but before Bat bad got time to breathe Sandy gasped out: "l beg y, ur pardon, sir. I see you're a man of tut thority. and I have just to throw my self on your tender tncrcii s.” “Jabers. go o,n!" returned Bat without a moment’s hesitation. Had the watchman.
