HOW BRUNSWICK SHOULD - TREAT HER MANY VISITORS Our city is rapidly filling up with new resi fonts, people who have come to make their home in our midst, atm their presence suggests a few thoughts ttpon our duty to the stran ger within our gales. A number of Brunswick’s hospitable and progres sive women have discussed tnis qttes tion with the writer and It is generally conceded (.hath we have been very re miss in this line in the past. Abroad our little city has earned a very unen viable reputation in regard to the re ception accorded socially to Ihe aver age new comer. Those who have suf fered from our pecuiiaritis in this re spect are not proe to keep silence upon the subject. Their wrongs are apt to be aired, particularly when their fros ty experience or other circumstances have caused them to remove to a. more friendly clime. Therefore, it is nod very remarkable that we have even tne name of being unsociable to strangers,” ‘'sefilsh", '‘indifferent,” de plorably careless or deplorably igno rant (as the critic may incline to des ignate it, of our duty, social and Christian, in this matter. From all parts of the country one meets stran gers who experienced or hoard of our disregard of this duty. That this con didtion has been a potent factor mili tating against cur growth and prog ress can not be doubted. Of course, there are exceptions to this rule. Many have come here and met with a very different reception from our peo ple, and have been loud in their praises of our charming hospitality and kindness to the new comer. Then, too, there are probably cases wle re. like life, cue's experience as anew resident is largely what one makes it. Tlie critical, fault-finding stranger who finds good in nothing and de cries our city, our customs, our see tional peculiarities (or failings), our lack of many things. Is not apt to find a warm place in the hearts of those who have lived here tlie greater part of their lives, and whet not w.l In land lag our many shortcomings, love and, believe in Brunswick. These people naturally find conditions unpleasant We make our own social atmosphere, as a rule, and the old residents, lov ing our beautiful city by the sea and jealous qf her rights, make ihe social world here. It is not to lie wondered at that they reciprocate Hie critic’s diatribes with a chill attitude. The average newcomt r, however, comes prepared to accept conditions acre without criticism, and to Tike otir clt and our people. it is our duty to Brunswick to acoeril them a warm welcome, and kq endeavor to create a pleasant impression as to our city’s social desirability. Common human ity should require thin, if there wen nothing else at stake. Tlie stranger in a strange land, lonely and home sick, how needful of our efforts to make life brighter! Lei us remember this, and leave nothing undone to earn a reputation for sociability and lies pitaiity to the new resident. NOTICE. All members of ‘‘Brunswick Lodge. THB BRUNSWICK DAILY NEWS, MOVEMENT ON FOOT TO BEAUTIFY OUR SQUARES A number of ladies who are very mueli interested m Brunswick’s wel fare and her appearance, are thinking seriously of organizing some sort of society for the impovement of our streets and squares, one of these en thusiastic ladies cheriaes tne idea of taking in hantl Atkinson Square, in front ot the jails as an object I- sun. An effort was made some time since to get the proper authorities interest ed and win their consent to tne ladies taking charge oi this square, hut nothing further has been heard from them and no interest seemed to be taken in the subject. These public spirited and energetic persons propose to organize a society .shortly and their first work will lie. if the city consents, to plant shrubs and flow, is, ornamen tal trees, etc., in this square. They propose to erect a mound or rockery n the center out of tne funds they will raise, and plant suitable plants and vines thereon. They further in tend to contribute gratis from their own gardens quantities of suitable plants for this purpose. Seals will be placed and possibly later on a foun tain and this already neat and attrac tive square will be converted into a really b anti fit! little park.
