Jacksonville's gala week promises to be greater and better. lad's see, lias the democratle party anything to be thankful for? You won’t get the News tomorrow unless you pay tout subscription MU today. Goveror Terrell evidently believes in that good campaign cry "get on tlie band wagon ' II elected him. The Catholic convent. It 1b n matter of general regret that the democrats of the south do not give the proper attention to general elections. Usually. In the primaries the full vote is polled but at the general elec tlons. especially where there Is no ap position, the people seem to reach the conclusion that heir votes arc not needed, but they are. It Is a subjec t of much adverse comment that 111 Jackson, the capital of Mississippi, less than 300 votes were polled at tlie recent elect ion. and in the whole of n Mississippi county only 62 votes were east. The lignt ness of toe vote In South Carolina. Mississippi and other Souihern states In general and state elections is of ten remarked upon and is the basis of the Northern republican argument In favor of the reduction of their rep resentation in Congress and the elei tornl college. And yet it does not signify as on its face it appears to. It does not imply either that the voter are not there or that laero Is an ah settee of interest, in politics. Then is no opposition party in eiuter of fat states named. Political differences or to speak more accurately, faction al differences arc fought out in the democratic primaries and the action of the primaries is conclusive of the result at the imlls. The people do not feel that It Is necessary to vote after the primaries nave spoken. JUDGE SPENCER R. ATKINSON. The announcement of Judge Atkin son which we print, elsewhere, that he will not be an applicant, for reap pointment ns railroad commissioner, will be read with sincere regret all over Georgia. Just what may be back of his an nouncement the public Is not advised, hut If, as appears on the surface, il Is based upon his aversion to enter into an unseemly scramble for this responsible office- an office that the people in creating Intended should be Above and beyond political scrambles then the public can but approve his course, while at the same time deep ly deploring the necessity and conse quence of It. Judge Atkinson has made an ablp. faithful and efficient official, and as of the hoard of railroad oom mlssioneiH has made a record that any successor he may have will do well to try and live up to. Tie has time and again vindicated the wisdom of nix appointmeui, and there aie many wno sincerely believe thal Gov ernor Terrell could have shown no butter zeal for the state and perform ed no better service for the people than in the very auspicious opening of his administration to have tender 'd and urged upon Judge Atkinson a reappointment, to his present position. lie this as il may, the announcement made by- Judge Atkinson, we construe lo mean that, al the expiration of his present term almost a year nonce—- lie will go out of the office that he has so creditably and acceptably fill ed, aud for the present, al least, re tire to private life. Mis record as judge of the superior courts of tlie Brunswick circuit and vs associate justice of the supreme burl are yet Besh before the people, 'ind bis long and valuable services in these positions, as well as bis services -n tne rail load commission, be no doubt, feels entitles him to a respite from official duties. Appreciating, however, nis excep tional talents, his high character and his vigorous manhood, we feel that we voice the sentiments oi the people 01 Ht-e state, and particularly--of south Georgia, when we express the nope that his respite may' he a brief one, ■nd font ere long ho will again be onnd in high position engaged in the icrvices of tho slate, in every posi ton that lie lias held he ..as been tltnful and true, bringing to bear in he performance of each duty ability fa nigh order and an honesty of pttr hse tiiat bus nc r yet shown signs it wavering. The state needs such neti at he holm of affairs, and it is vet a source of regict when one of item retires. Here In Hrituswlek and in Soul ieorgia where Judge Atkinson is best Blown, his retirement will be most egretted. and hero tie will find the piickost response to any ambition lit' my have in the future. Ills retirement means the severance >f the only link connecting this Inline hate section of the state with the ovornmont of tne state, and puts us '’here we were before his induction ito state office-- without roprosenta iou in tlie affairs of the state. We visit his successor will, who ever be nay be. We wish Governor Terrell a uceessful adminlstiation. Out- oolieern now is that the state s to lose the service of so compe i'tit a man as Judge Atkinson. Tlie Gainesville Sun says: When lie money comes liack\to some hust les:, men who have invested in •> -• ertiseinent in a good medium, they all It good luck. ..tit to, US tell yell vant it is. It is simply the returns out the very host Investment a Ims ness man can make, and though you nay call it good luck, it is the kind bat always comes from a liberal unount of advertising in a good uie littnt.
