The Montgomery Advertiser says "Brunswick, at last, has a first cions newspaper." The Tsinpa Tribune says: 'Don't try to drown your hoiy nva in a mg. I Up to last week the fame of the •possum as a political power was con fined io Georgia, but now it is getting to be a national vote grafter. The old saying “you can't keep a good man down,” may be true, but some of them are “mighty” dusty when they get up. This bill is rtf vital importau'e to our seotloil and we ’nope It will pa ; , 'he house and become a law. A KEYNOTE. In an address made at tne mass meeting held Friday night ilm. K.l win Brobston toucaed upon a matter that should receive the very hot eon •Iteration of the people of this city generally. Mr. Brobfitoti wants mote aih ijtiate school facilities ill 111':;,' Al l; ;|IIU he! has sounded a key net a thar shells. ' and will be taken up oy the pc ><>K end carried on to success. It Is a deplorable Rtat? of affair when the children, or at.least, i put of them cannot be •; lucate 1 lor the simple reason _t nut the c is not s JlTi cient room in bite city schools .<> ac-' commodate them. It D a condition that calls for a spee!> remedy an 1 it is to be hoped that It will very soon meet the attention u menu. 4l some, nought to .right here . * woman finds a pe on in the seductive crl • first, glimpse the prices of s listed in these seems tempt ugly low. The other points to lie con sidered never seem to enter her cakra lalions. The cost of jiostage or ex press, tne iinconvenience, the unsat isfactory nature of many previous dealings or Die probable disappoint ment that may accrue In regard to the purchase -al! these points are Ig nored by the average man and woman. The very fad that a garment , a bat. or ;my article that has been bought out of town, seems to lend it a glamor, a value, wholly disproportionate to its real merit. The average man or wo man thinks only of the few cents' benefit accruing to iiis or her Individ ual poeketbook in regard lo this mat ter. The larger view, their duty to the town that affords them a living is ignored. Asa result, of their disregard of this duty many dollars go abroad that fnight better stay at home, to t ne advantage of ottr merchants, and often to that of the buyer himself. The man or woman who Is above the average in regard to Brunswick’s good and also the law of reciprocity in tills matter," who puts the general good of our city and the share he or she may have in its upbuilding ahead of his personal advantage, waives the question of a few cents difference In price, and patronizes home concerns. He or sue religiously seeks to help and encourage the merchant whose pros perity and success will contribute to Brunswick's prosperity and success. This is right. This indicates a high er, nobler conception of one’s duty as a citizen. This conception of duty is what makes prosperous towns. The man who believes In Ills own town and patronizes home merchants, who indi vidually does all in ills power to help his own town, is a valuable iTizon. This sort rtf citizen is what we need, I ess of the average or below the aver age, and more of those, above it. Men and women who seek first to promote the growth anil welfare of their city rather than those who selfishly con sider only the small individual gain. JURY SYSTEM BAD. Referring to the friction between newspapers and tne court in the mur der trial at Houston, Tex., the Hous ton Post makes the following edito rial ijpmment: “Toe "rejection of jurors in a local murder trial beeanse they had roan newspapers unit formed opinions,' again calls attention to a serious fault in ottr jury system, or rather in the rules of practice In such eases. “In this iluy there is no intelligent man wlio does no! read newspapers and form opinions upon the narration of facts as they appear. The Judge themselves ifn it. and it would be just as reasonable to disqualify the tales man. The judge and the talesman alike are men with open minds and may be trusted to form new opinions on Ihe evidence and the law developed in the trial. “The application of this rule simply refers tho administration of the crimi nal law to men who do not road news paper:'. to tin- unintelligent, the un thinking, the Idle and the vicious. “Know!ng the difficulty its securing juries under this absurd ntle. judges have deemed it neoessnry, as in the ease in Harris county under consider ation, to forbid the newspapers to pub lish the testimony lest there be a mis trial and the whole available jury list, be disqualified by having read the tes tony. “The l lilttre of justice along these liin'-y is what gives rise to mobs, Un <h r the exclusion of reading men from til,' Juries it is easy for tue defense to obtain Indeed it is dlfftfftlt to avoid obtaining—some juror who will insure a mistrial, and a mistrial Is a halfway step to acquittal. "When the law and its administra tion are marked by such follies it need not ue surprising that the mou should nave a contempt for the court and proceed to administer justice is the primitive way." .AT WE NEED. Hoard of Trade and tae people Brunswick generally arc finally turning their attention to a subject which should have had attention many years ago—factories. Show us a eity in all the country without them and we will show you I one eommereially stagnant. After all they are the very bone and sinew of business world. They furnish employ ment for labor, skilled and unskilled, and through their medium tne marts of trade are kept thoroughly alive. Brunswick needs them and if we ever hope for more commercial pres tige than we have at present we will have to have them. Virtually the only Industry we have is that afforded us in the way of shipping. Even tually the great, lumber and na val stores forest will have neon <!<■ muled and as much as we re,'pel to realize it. It win cause a correspond ing decrease in shipping lines. Waal, then, will take Its place? At Its meeting Friday the Brunswick Board of Trade, in a very few miutes set the people of this city a splendid example by appropriating some two thousand dollars for the purpose of in vestment in some small factory. This was not an appropriation, let It be un derstood, by that organization, but the amount was subscribed bv Individual members who chanced to lie present. This is a splendid illusl ration of what can be done if our people will but make up their minds to a condition and not a theory that surely and tru ly exists. The people of Bruswiek have never encouraged factories in the proper way. A few years ago a shoe factory was started here. How many Bruns* wick merchants patronized it? A brewery was founded, but-Schllt*. Bud welser. Chattanooga and Acme beer still found its way to Brunswick in the usual quantities. A cotton factory suffered the same fate and a number of others. The people of Brunswick, sooner or later, must learn the le.sons (hat have made other * cities great, ami strong. Let's get together and pull for factories. A writer In Good Housekeeping for October gives figures on the uniiealth ftlless of carpets that are enough to put the carpet makers out of business. Mr. Willson, the author of this article, asserts that ne placed a three inch saucer on the unswopt carpet of a tenement house floor and in five min i utes seventy-five germs ‘settled on it. After sweeping the floor the saucer was found to have twenty-seven germs on its surface. Tho News this morning contains sixteen pages, one hundred and twelve columns.
