General Corbin's statement in bis an
nual tx pon discouraging the .marriage
ol lhe younger officers in the army has
been much discussed, says a Washing
ton dispatch to liie Now York Ameri
can and Journal. Speaking of the mut
ter the oilier day, General Corbin said:
"1 am net opposed to marriage of oirf
cers of the.army any lime. Inn if is rea
sonable to assume that a young officer
tviili poor pay cannot attend to the Un
til sol his position, whieh are often ex
pensive. and also take cure of a family.
’I he question is' not one of sentiment.
It is o-,r of dollars and cents.
"I'or from being opposed to marriage,
I n lll surges!ing ways by which the

Major General Young says: “I agree
with General Corbin. I believe that
marriage should not take place until
there is :: certainty of proper support
which will not interfere with an offi
cer's duty to the army and the coun
try."
Brigadier General l.tidinglon says:
“The question is an interesting one. and
the adjutant general treats it from the
practical standpoint. The principle is
all right. As for myself, I didiiT-unnr
ry until 1 was a major."
General Corbin gave some • interest
ing statements about famous officers
and their marriages. "One of the
cases in point,” lie said, "is that of Gen
eral Grant. He was married when a
second lieutenant and resigned because
lie could not support his family on his
pay. Lieutenant General Miles did not
marry until he was a colonel. General
Hancock was married when lie was a
captain.”
