Some of the negroes of Delaware have passed resolutions denouncing as "a base, wilful and .malicious slat) der" jho statement of ex-Semuor Hig gins that “the negro vote Is now hope lessly debauched in that state. u stead of making this show of virtue, says the Pailndelphia Record, "under Inspiration of the Addlcks patty t,n authors of these resolutions would have done much better by making a humiliating confession of what evert body knows, accompanied by a promise of some amendment." The Record adds that tHo prices of this venal vote In Delaware "hayj steadily risen with the demand.’' “LISTEN TO THE MOCKING BIRD.” Septimus Winner,, who died the other day, was a musical genius and had the rare, and happy faculty of writing songs and adapting them to music. None of his poems can be ac counted of a high order or of artistic quality in words, but his music, to which they were wedded, made them njcue popular 'and permanent than the productions of more gifted hards. His ‘ Listen to tne Mocking Bird" is said to have netted to tlie publishers sev eral millions of dollars, but he sold it lor $35. He came near causing a re volt In the Army of the Potomac, ut ter McClellan's dismissal hy a song en titled “Give Us Back Our Old Com mander." Yet very iew people knew the name of the composer, in this gen eration. The Baltimore News, refer ring to his most celebrated composi tion, says: “That nimble contagious melody has been sung in more parlors and played at more Sunday-school entertainments tiian any other piece of music ever written, it has been ground out of street organs and pianos by the bil lion. Yet senp* of his songs will probably outlast toe more 'ambitious strains of bis superiors in melody. Many have written songs, but could not furnish the music for them. It was an English bishop who. when the historian Freeman bad worn out his patience w4th his rudeness, intro duced him to a waiting audience as “the distinguished scholar Fiat so ad mirably describes and illustrates the savagery of oqr ancestors.” Treat Inn IJrn. % Cold water wlrtf ice in it is the thing to use when an accidental burn from acids or alkalis is encountered.
