The News Publishing Company de •lres It to be distinctly understood that all legal advertisements must be paid for In advance. We cannot afford to 'vota our Bpace to such advertise* ments and wait ot, tha courts for the money, ,* Brunswick wants factories and is going to have* them. It is certainly a good nature*] tlgl to say the h ast of It. Tho death penalty hill died a natural death in tho legislature*. Savannah has troubles of her own. A municipal contest is on in that city. The Tampa papers are now throw ing bouquets at each olher. This is nice. The Board of Tardo should keep light after that American Cigar fac tory. > la reported that the Brunswick pilot boat Oracle is,sotting hor rivals a 'hot pace down In Pensacola. The little republic of Columbia feeeniß determied to give tho United States all the trouble Hite can about that canal treaty. Hi uniswtek a shipping for Novein ber will compare favorably with the corresponding month el previous years. Ihe Chattanooga News very tersely says that "many a fond lather has spent ten thousand dollars on his sons education and only got a quarter back.” i | What bus become of the negotin ttona between too Brunswick Board Of Trade and the American Cigar Cos. This matter should not ho allowed to drop. * The East Coast l.lne has reduced its passenger rates to three cents in nil Florida points. This is a move in tin* right direction and tho other lines in Florida should follow the good exam ple set by the East coast people. All the American papas aro sending for their daughters in Barts to conic home, since tho sad death of Mrs. Oore. WontliT if thi’su papas learning that Paris Is a dangerous place for young girls. After all preparations had been tuade in Kansas City for a Mexican bull tight. It was called oil. at tue last minute, In deference to public opinion. Kansas City people must be semi-civil ized, anyhow. Roland XI. Molineux was offered over SI,OOO a week to appear in a melodra ma called "The Road to Ruin.” xf 1.. had accepted the otter, he would doubtless have soon been a living am. real example or the title of Itis piny. Another one of those unwise profcs sore. J. Scott Clarke, of the North western university, says a man can "live in comfort and save money on S3OO per year.’ Tae medal ought to have bis name engraved on it, right •way. ANGER AND DEPRAVITY. Northern papers are fond of pointing out differences in the north and south, but there is a difference in one strik ing particular that the editor of the Courier-Journal of Ismisville has brought before the public. This is the difference in the majority of killings or other crimes that occur in these diffeent sections of the United States. In the south there an*, unfortunately tar too many crimes of public violence wnere we meet, openly ami shoot one or more of their antagonists to death. of this sort are not so com mon in the north" Butonthe other hand, secret crimes aro much more frequent. A crime like that of which Molinettx was acquitted—of commit ting murder by sending poison through the mails—seldom occurs in the south. On the other hand, assassinations with Intent to rob and crimes which point to perversity are exceedingly common In t.h< northern states. The most of these uev :r get into the southern pa pers at all. In tho lonely districts of New England whole families are often killed and houses tired with the evi dent intent lo secure a little money. Nobody cites these as evidence of the depraved sentiment of the communi ties where they occur, though there have been cases wnere they were hushed in consequences of threats made by suspected persons, or by brib ing of witnesses. The truth Is there Is too much crime in all parts of the country, and much of it is due to a lax administration ol the law. It Is not a matter of geogra phy at all. In all parts of the country homicides and Other offenses against the person are treated with a tender ness which unquestionably fosters crime. It is not, so in Europe, and such offenses aro much less common there. Tilts is not a justification of molt law at all, for in most cases whore mobs intervene legal conviction would be easy. The men whose mon ey or social position secures them Im munity from conviction ate also able in most cases to avoid the mobs, lint the orderly administration of the law affords adequate protection from all crimes that can ho proved communi ties must pay tlu* penalty of lax ad mlnistrnl lon ot justice. OUR IMMENSE GROWTH. Tlie treasury department lias just Is sued a monograph giving the statistics of the growth of this nation during the century from ISOU-to 1900, and the figures me of a nature to dazzle the * imagination. The total wealili ot the country has grown from $7,000,000,000 in 1890 to an estimated $94,000,000,000 In 1900, or nearly 1,400 per cent. Our wealth per capita in 1850 was hut $307, while in 1800 It was $1,235. At the beginning of the century the pub. lie debt was sls per capita, in 184' h had fallen to 21 cents. Before the beginning of the civil war, in 1861, it was $2.74, but iu 1805 it had risen to $70.98. Since then it has been stead ily decreasing, until this year it. ts but sft.97, not at all a troublesome burden to a nation with the vast wealth possessed by our own. The amount of money in circulation is now $38.40 per capita, the highest point it has ever attained. The depos its in the savings banks of the land amount to $2,597,094,580, which is a fair index of the prosperity enjoyed by the poorer classes, and the deposits in tne national hanks, which are pat* roniv.ed by the wealthier classed, have grown from $600,910,5TS in 1565 to $3,111,600,196 this year. Fulton county now seems lo be in a fair way to have another hanging be fore Christmas. Millard l.ee, the young man who murdered Miss Lilia Buttles in a country church, has been re-sentenced, after hnivng his case passed upon by the supreme court. He has been sentenced to be hanged De cember 23rd. K\ Representative Wise, of Virginia, who is fighting the new constitution of that state for a consideration, evi dently believes in litigation by whole sale. He proposes to sue everybody and everything that stands in the way of uvsro registration, even if Tic has to frame an Indictment against the entire white population of .the Old Do minion.
