Distinguished members of -the so
ciety for the prevention of cruelty to
animals have been invited to a horse
meat banquet on December 15. by the
Fleicher Zeitung. National organ of
the German butchers, which says it
desires to measure the sincerity of
the society in issuing the recent ap
peal to the public to cat more horse
meat, so as to ue merciful to animals
unfit for work, which will lit relieved
of their sufferings If the consumption
of horse meat, is made more popular.
The Fleicher Zeitung has not yet re

as good a horse meat feast as an ac
complished cook can produce, hot the

PEACE ON EARTH COOD WILL TO
MEN.
A Christmas sermon that comes in
time, arriving with the first, day of
December, to all subscribers of the
Pilgrim, is given by Willis .1. Abbott,
the brilliant editor of that magazine.
Among other things—all aqualy in
foresting and well written, this article
says:
"But actual war, though barfla-ious
and senseless, is nevertheless respci
sihle in the long run for less human
suffering, for less waste of manhood;
and fewer tears'of women and chil
dren than the ceaseless struggle for
existence under existing industrial con
ditions. From the warfare of armies,
natiorfc enjoy long respites. It is thir
ty years since either Germany or
France has set its perfected machinery
for murder In operation. Russia has
been at peace for almost a score of
years. Rngland. It is true, has always
some predatory war on hand, in which
machine guns are pitted against ar
rows and assagais, but the United
States, up to three fatal years ago,
seemed likely to complete a glorious
half century without a shot fired in
anger. It has seemed that one war to
a generation vJTts about the average
for "eiylllzed": nations, while the un
civilised ones coliTd rely upon peace
ns long as their lands wore too poor
to awaken the covetousness of their
betters.
But the other warfare, the universal
stuggle oi man against man—or, more
pitiful vet. of man and woman against
each other -for tlic opportunity to
earn a living Ik incessant. For it are
no Hague conferences, peace commis
sions, proloealfi, treaties. Once in
a while it flares out in explosions of
dynamite, in trains wrecked or mills
burned. In “firm repression or vlo
lenee.” which usually means the shoot
Ing of seme innocent bystanders by
deputy sheriffs or militiamen. Then
fine attention of iho country is arous
ed. and tnerc Is much discussion of
Iho conditions on Hint particular point
of the world-wide battle line. Arbitra
tion. perhaps, is invoked, a decision
awarded, and both parties settle hack
sullenly to work and preparation for
another contest. But the strike nn .
the lockout are only phases of the uni
versal warfare of business and indus
try, and respite from either or from
both no more portends industrial
peace Bum the somnolence of Mount
l’elee indicates tnat the great central
fire which knows Its heart as well as
that of Aetna. Strnmboli, and Vesu
vius, is extinguished.

Publicity given to I’rofcssor Lorens'
treatment of Lorita Armour has made
Ibis whole county interested in its
'success, and from one end ot' the land
to the other there will go ft thrill of
pleasure today at the news (hat the
little patient has walked a tew steps.
And this pleasure will be increased liy
the knowledge that not only in the
Armour home, but in many other and
humbler households in various cities,
ihere win lie great joy on accouut of
the lame warning. A natural outcome
of his visit will he that other physi

extent as seems desirable, and tail'
permanent good may come of it. Mean
while, we all watch the experiment
if it can be called an experiment -
with Miss Armour, and hope that it
