BEN HARLEY WAS CONVITfc ~ OF
ASSAULT WITH INTENT
TO MURDER.
In the superior court yesterday the
entiri forenoon was consumed in hear
tag the case of Ben. Harley, a Fliipto
negro, who Ik charged with assaul t' and
hitch• to murder, The crime was com
mitted about two months ago'at the
cypress mills.
It seems that a number of negro#
were gambling at the mills, ad soon
engaged in a fight.
O. K. Collar, who Is superintendent
at the mills, Interceded In the Inter
est of harmony, whereupon Hurley op
ened fire upon him. Mr. Collar return
ed the fire and succeeded in wounding
Ihe negro, one of t. he bullets taium ef
feet, in the negro's leg.
Harley escaped but was caught a
few days later by Deputy Sheriff Pyles
and Officer MeCasktli. near Thailman
In the ease yesterday the prisoner
