Manning, a white man who has been conducting a grocery store near the Cypress mills, has mysteri ously disappeared and his wife and a numl)cr of creditors are quite anxious to locate his whereabouts. It seems that Manning left the city early In the week, and wan ifccompa n|p| by his wife. They went together as far as VVaycross, and, at that place, according to the story of Mrs, Win ning, her husband disappeared with out saving a word to hor.’ad's'he seems to he at a loss to know what became of him. She returned a day or so later to Brunswick and has Si nee-been out at the store, and now says that she does not know where her husband is. She taints that he left her without, any money. Yesterdky some of his creditors had warrants sworn out against tint man and thtt store, which has been run by his wife wince iris departure, was closed up by an officer. The woman seemed to he greatly wrought up ovei the affair and said that site had neith er money or provisions. Manning lias been living at the Cy press mills for some time and those wlio knew him best think that atiother woman is mixed in the affair and it is thought that he lias run away v ita her. Among llic Greeks and Romans al manacs or calendars were not writti n for the general public, Imt were pre served ns part of Ui>* esoteric learning of tl\c priests, whom the people had to consult not only for the dates of festivals, but for the proper times when various legal proceedings wight fie In •tit.utod. The sym hoUcnl Man or Man of Signs (Homo tviguonun), still a eonmion feature in almanacs, appears in Ihis tiook, not, it is eunjecturcd, fur the first tinny as it seems to have been a survival from the time of Ftolemy's "AtUiagesi," a eol'ec tion of classic observations and prob lems relating to geometry and astron omy. The first printed almanac was the "Pro Pluribus Aunis," issued at Vienna In 1457 by an astronomer named Pur bach. The earliest known almanac de voted expressly to the year of issue ivas published by Rabelais in 1533 Thenceforth the ephemeral yearly character of the publication dime to be definitely recognised by alumnae mak ers.
