It you arc not an advertiser try Tuesday or Wednesday’s issue, it will pay. ~ rl is a fact that News advertisers are doing the bulk of the Christmas business Die Nows sincerely hopes that the police will oo required lo wear uni (onus next year. In Milwaukee county, Wisconsin, there are tiOIJ applicants for hlt.v seven minor positions which are at the ills postil ol' tile county ofticers. The Augusta Chronicle says Speak er Morris is evidently glad It is all over. But it isn’t all over. 11 is just one-third over, says Representative Stovall. The Macon Telegraph contends that the ‘'giving ol presents” at this season is greatly overdone. But such tilings as fruit cakes and Christmas puddings are just as apt. to lie underdone, so the average is kept down. The Norfolk Landmark says: ■'Whatever else ho may be, the preai dent of Venezuela Is a shrewd politi cian whose daring is equal to a erisis of any size, domestic or International. He Is working with all his Blight lo drag the Monroe doctrine into his pres ont trouble, amt developments of the sort he is looking for are not impossi ble. it is'a melancholy reflection that the moral force of the Monroe doctrine bar. been weakened by our folly in having invaded the Orient.” WILL HAVE CHRISTMAS MONEY. Tle Georgia teachers will tot their salaries in time for Christmas. . a special from Atlanta says: - •'Secretary Hitch, of the executive department, was busy today drawing no thiy*eM-eutive warrants for the HtSiool teachers of tin state, who will get their Christmas money next Mon dny. These warrants will aggregate about |3tto,tHMi. This is next to (tie best pay is,cut to he made to the teachers. i'hej sue ®upjK)se(| to in* paid monthly, tint if they get It quarterly they are dmug well The last payment will he made sometime is January next.” THE SOUTH AMERICAN TROUBLE. Speaking of the Venezuelan trouble, .the Philadelphia Press, a stalwart re publican paper, says: “If the reports that come from Car acas are true, the destruction of the forts at Puerto Libertador by the British and Germans was a precipitate act. and not defensible. But there may be a different story. "The report states that, word was sent by the British and German com manders at. 4: SO p. m. demanding satis faction for the ill-treatment of the offi cers and crew of an English vessel, with the statement that bombardment would begin at 5 p. m. if satisfaction was not furnished. A reply could rare ly have been expected in half an hour, when bombardment began. That was not. sufficient time even to remove women and children. But the Teply was in the hands of the Italian consul ar, fi o’clock, though he had not. time to communicate It to the commanders of the allied fleet. Tt is of significance that a German resident and two of his servants, liv ing three miles from the fort, who probably knew nothing of the bombard rneTit wore killed by the lire from the ships. The ill-treatment of the Brli Isb sailors is said to have been done by Lie people of the town, and not by the government. It ma'y have Justl ■d bombardment, but nothing would justify such action without ample no tice. •Cable despatches assert .-,ar the German residents in Venezuela are very peisisumi in denouncing their Wcrimient lor its precipitate action. it cannot, ho Bald that Germany nas beep very precipitate, because her claims have oeeu pending for a long ihhJ But her course or procedure is Uygur to criycisui. The German gov t rtinieut. as well as the British govern ment,' ha begun a war to collect claims which nave never undergone ex amination. Arbitration would seem to meet the demands of great nations when their claims are against such a small and bankrupt nation as Venezue la. But the offer of arDitrauon nus noi noon accepted. •'t he UrlUsh secretary ot foreign affairs has spoken favorably of the of yei of Venezuela to sunmlt the claims u> at filtration; but Germauy seems to think that. t,no offer comes 100 late. the Urtusli are evidently disturbed over some To the performances of the allied Heel, and they nave announced iliai the lie minus were wholly respon sible for sU}king the small war vesseiß ol Venezuela. The eagerness of Italy lo Join the other two nations is not n good sign, if arbitration is not ac oi pti-d there Is danger of trouble, though all will depend on the wisoom oi iho iieet commanders, and their course so far lias not been above crit toed.” Tlh> Thomas Jefferson Association, of which Admiral Dewey is president, is taking well advised slops to erect a national memorial to the author ol the Declaration of Bulependence. The movement is entirely national and pa iriuttc in its character. Solomon Didn’t Know. A man with strong opinions of bis own as to the fitness of things is gar dener and man of all work to a minis ter in a rural parish in Scotland. One boisterously windy day the clergyman dispatched a message to bis servant to sow a portiou of a field known to them both as tho "bank.” in no very amia ble mood tlie man made bis way to the study. “Dae ye want me to sow the bank?” he Inquired somewhat sternly, -Yes, John; I do.” replied his master. “Ye Minna sow in slch a day o’ Wind," explained John. “Well.” replied the minister, “you know Solomon says, ‘lie that consider eth the wind will not sow.’ ” ”1 dlmia care a button what Solomon says," John returned irately. “1 fancy lie kens as little about farmers' work us ye due or he wadua hue said ony such tiling. Naetiody. but daft folk wad think o’ Botvin’ in sleli wind. Solo mon may say what lie likes, but him nn’ ye lioth wadua mak’ a guid plow man between ve.” And the “bank” was not sown that day.—London Tit-Bits. ‘aand si unoid nmoo snvms s.o-iH V JOHOR H fta Jf*ow spn sooqg .<qq pun ejjnus Xpq 'site.)
