Wgß, exporting much prosperity from

That ease of arid I ration may lie a

We had hoped not, but from present
indications it looks like Mayor Eman

regular matinee.
The greatest annoyance about this
Venezuelan trouble is that there are
no royal Christinas guests nt the new
palace like Wide House!
There is ‘still some talk about how
ruueh Colonel llryan gave to the pops
list campaign fund and how much to
the democratic. What’s the use. The
money was nil spent long ago, and a
new set of contentions has conus up.

MARCONI'S SUCCESS.
The wonderful Marconi system of
•iroWpt Ups ao far
M&rioted
ed Sf the world ’rib SurjAay that it was
a success.
Marconi is a young Italian who has
devoted his life to investigating and
perfect ng a system for sending elec
trical currents on etheric waves across
great distances. In the por.ent experi
ment he has sent messages from Cape
Breton, Canada, to Cos mwah, - ng., a
distance of 2,300 miles across the At
lantic ocean.
The prlalcple on which Marcont
grains are sent is this: A machine
to generate electric currents is put to
work and when great energy is stored
an elect ie spark a foot long is permit
ted to escape. The receiving instru-i
tnent at he other end lias to bo prop
erly attuned to receive the message.
In the messages transmitted by
ocean steamships to each other the
electric '’sparks which generate the
etheric waves is comparatively small
with I hat used for crossing the ocean.
In (lie successful experiments at
Cape Breton a forty horse power en
gine was uoed to generate the electric
current, and twenty times the waves
forming tli letter “8" were sent over
the ocean.
Truly this is a wonderful age In
which we. are living. And this is only
the early part of the twentieth centu
ry. We are on the verge of still great
er womtprs.
HOLLY AND MISTLETOE.
The using of holly and mistletoe
during the Christ mas season is of
great antiquity. For many centuries
holly lms been used In England ft
denotative purposes. Being an ever
green and Its redbeirleß delighting th.
eye It has becbtae associated with
Christ nijts.
Tile tjtlstletob was held In rever
ence bjr* the Druids, lr found growltp
on their sacred tree. The robtts was
their sacred tree and whatever was
found sowing on it they regarded as
sent front Heaven as tho mark of a
t.rfce chosen liy God. Such eases of
parasitism were rare, and when they
occurred attracted much attention, par
ticularly on the sixth day of the
moon, when their months am years
began. They called it “omnia sanau-
tour,'' meaning "all heal.”
Priests clothed in white robes ar
tended the tree and cut the mistletoe
with golden hooka, and it was caught
. u a white mantle. Then they st >
the victims to bo sacrificed, praying
God to I dess thoir gift.
The mistletoe figures also in Scan
dinavian legend, as having furnished
.lie material of the arrow with which
i(aidur, ilie sun-gou, was slain by i—e
mind god 1 latter. * ”
