THE LAST SABBATH.
This is the last Sabbath in 1902, and
at thin special time It seems to us
that we of Brunswick could, with a j
pardonable pride, say au revolr to the
parting year and with right gladsome
heart hid a warm welcome to 1903,
now smilingly standing on the thresh
hold of time. ,
The dying year, rapidly passing into
the dim and distant things that, used
to be, has been very kind to Bruns
wick. It has held us aloof from pesti
lence, ravages and disease, it has ush
ered Into our midst a general splr,
of activity, and with one fell Bwoop
it has placed us upon a pinnacle of
prosperity unuquaied In all the years
that are tenderly twined about Bruns
wick’s past.
As we have said before, we bid fare
well to this year with somewhat ot
regret; w'e would that it could be ex
tended even Into the unknown. How
ever, that great arbiter of human des
tiny has placed its limit upon her lon
gevi ait bght b now s^e * 8 P assin £
into the vg over -lows of the very win-'
ter of her We bid her au revolr.
'a deu
She has bi r fit us both tears and
smiles, but. on (he whole the smile
has been more radiant, more far-reach
ing and more material than was the
depth of the tear, and at this last
parting moment we bid good-bye to l
1902 with a feeling akin to deepest
regret. However, to the smiling new
year that awaits us, and with a deep
realization that it Is about to place
her faithful arms about us we extend
the hand of fellowship auJ right earn
estly bid her welcome.
We have much to expect from 1903,
and we hail her coming as doth the
mariner w hen tosrfed upon lempesiu
ous scits finds a beacon’s light In the
distance,
Brunflwlek's ship of commerce is
headed hard-to; a stalwart hand is at
the helm and if 1903 will wreath 1 is
hrpW with that munificent benlson
iifoue oan give then the vigorous
Iltle crart will anchor safe in the har
bor of prosperity.
So, good-bye 1303 and welcome i‘lo3.
amt In ail events with an uluding
faith in the givor of .til good and per
fect gifts Brunswick rests her faith
and receives as warmly the now year
as sue regretfully bids adieu to l'he
old.
IS IT WU?
It has only boon a little whlfe since
Minister Wu left America, with a lin
gering farewell, but Wu is enter
prising and quick, so it may not be
far-fetched, to connect him witii re
forms to be Inaugurated In China soon,
it was to have been expected that the
un-to-date cx-Mlnister Wu would re-
form China or die in the attempt, if
he has to live there long. He has be
come used to America; and he hau
tlie spirit to prefer twenty years of
America to a cycle of China or any
other old place.
These measures of radical reform
are duly credited to tho Empress
Dowager; but a reading of them will
make one think that the mind and in
fluence of Wu have been at work,
tearing down (hat. old wall shutting
China in.
There are eight reforms, “earnestly
recommended’' for the Chines govern
ment. These are as follows:
First — l That sons of the nobles,
dukes, princes and higr crown officers
shall he sent to join various provincial
armies organized after foreign models
to obtain a practical military educa
tion. v
Second —That officers Af this high
rank shall be selected to travel In
America and Europe for a year or
more to broaden their views.
Third —That the government shall
put in force a system of military con-!
: scriptlon whereby the male population
of Chinn may become soldiers ot ed
ucation. and an immense army can be'
thus mobilized on shoit notice should ’
‘ any future occasion demand it.
i Fourth —That gun foundries, arsenals
carriage and shell factories shall T*e
rests niwheu. throughout, the empire,
i Sixth—That all Buddhists and Tao
ist temples, monasteries and nunner-
I ies now existing without government
sanction shaJJ, he confiscated and turn
ed into colleges and schools.
Seventh—Compulsory attendance at
school of all male children over ten
years old. ;tj
Kight—The establishment through
out China of law, military and techni
cal schools.
Who doubts that China Is waking
up; and that ere long, the missiona
ries will have to seek other Helds iu
which to suffer martyrdom.

Solomon Didn't Khott.
A man with strong opinions of his
own as to the fitness of things is gar
dener and man of all work to a minis

boisterously windy cav the clergyman
dispatched a message to h’s servant >

study.
“Dae ye want me to sow the bank?”
he inquired somewhat sternly.
“Yes, John; I do.” replied his master.
“Ye canna sow in sich a day o’
wind.” explained John.
“Well,” replied tli;> minister, “you
know Solomon says, ‘He that considcr

“I diuna care a button what Solomon

he kens as little about farmers’ work

And the “bank” was uot sown that
day.—London Tit-Bits.
