The world’s national debts form t.ba subject of an Interesting report by O. P. Austin, the chief of the bureau of statistics, tn the treasury department. According to Mr. Austin’s estimate, the national debts of the world amount to a hundred million dollars a month — or *1.200,000,000. Tlie Interest of and other charges on this Indebtedness or the nations amount to a hundred million dollars a month —or *1,200,000.000 annually. The principal national debts of the world today, stated In the order of their magnitude, are as follows: Rus sia, *3,j07,000,000; United Kingdom, $3,000 .Ooo.ooo; Italy, *2,583,000,000;; Germany and the German states, *2,- 573,000,000; Spain. *1,728,000,000; Australia, *1,183,000,000; Austria-Hun gary, *1.154,000,000; India, *1,031,000- 000; Un.ued States *963,000,010; and all other couutrics, *8375,000,000, Mr. Austin’s- report also brings out the Interesting fact that during the last 50 years the English-speaking countries * ave been the most conser vative about their national debts, con stantly making efforts to reduce their obligations; while J.atin countries, on the other hand, have constantly In creased their national debts, both through wars and by maintaining large standing armies, and by reason of constant deficits in their budgets. Mr. Austin further shows that some of the Unlit! nt,Hoffs have made bond issues that were announced as "perpetual” and there is no Infetition of ever re deeming them. At t'iie present tine one-half of the enormous debt ot France lands in the-form oi "pei'pe* mil 3 per cent rentes.’ 'fhe Gentian and Slavic nations have also rapidly increased their debts and have shown little progress In reducing them. BANK ADVERTISING. A great many of the leading banking institutions of the United states have begun a dignified and systematic cam paign of advertising and we believe will soon be almost Impossible for any bank to enjoy any great prosperity without using printers' Ink. We notice that, a number of the Georgia and Florida banks have caught on to the .advertising Idea and ere hushing n for ail it Is worth. The officers of a number of theae hanks have recently been interviewed and they say deposits have steadily in creased since their advertising start ed. Some, of these advertisements ate forcible and convincing arguments as to why the man in every station of Me should lay aside something for the rainy day and no person onn read tines advertisements without becom ing cotiVlaeed that they would fare bet ter try toiiinving the advice given and nine oi every too follow it. The aiiverilsing Idea Is striking oven the very ethical' pro?esslomU men, and they, too. Invariably profit by it. ii i iii i* Discomfort*!.
