DEEP WATER WON IT.
Brunswick secured her wire and
steel works, capitalized at *10,000,000,
through her deep water harbor. Af
ter investigating various points Bruns
wick water was decided to be the
deepest and most permanent on the
south Atlantic seaboard and the best
suited for heavy draught vessels.
While we do not envy our little Geor
gia ciiy in the least on her good
luck, her selection emphasizes ,Irhe
fact that all southern seaboard towns
are in the line of development, as
northern capital is lending south
ward, as the climate, labor and supply
resources are now much better’ than
in many northern cities.
Ten millions of dollars is a large

it will prove an incentive to other
enterprises, as one generally follows
another.
One of Ibe drawbacks to Jackson
ville i the lack of deep water in the
Si. Johns river—twenty-five miles
from the Atlantic ocean —but this wa
lls- is being gradually deepened for
commercial purposes, and if money
and energy cart secure it it will ul
timately be had. Steam dredges are
at work, the jetties at the mouth
of the St. Johns river are to be in
creased, all with a hope of making
navigation heller. Once twenty-fivo
feet of water Is declared permanent
in (lie St. Johns river between Jack
sonville anil the sea, there need he
no apprehension as to future devel
opment in this city. Jacksonville is
always pressing forward and the citi
zens will nevr allow retrogression.
Tho other conditions here, aided by
deep water, would within a decade
give to us such standing in the manu
facturing and commercial world as
to place us among the leading cit
ies of the nation. Deep water and cap
ita! combined make a mighty lever to
success. Jacksonville Metropolis.

LABOR AND CAPITAL, 4
- < •
(By Wyllys Rede, D. D.)
We are confronted today by one
problems with which the world has
ever had to deal. The two great forc
of the most perplexing and anxious
es, labor and capital, 'nave been forced
into an attitude of antagonism. The
relationships between them are grow
ing every day more intensely strained.
There is danger of a fierce and dead
ly conflict most disastrous in its ef
fects. How is such a struggle to be
staved off? How are these apparently
hostile interests to be reconciled?
How are the industrial problems of
thw day to be equitably and perma
nently solved? No honest man can
blind himself to the difficulty which
these questions present.
Will it be by political means? Home
Ray that, if labor feels itself aggrieved
and wronged, it should organize for
its own defense, that a great people's
party should be formed. They point
out that, capital has already made use
of politics and (sometimes by fair
means and again by foul) has wen.
many advantages for itself. Why
should not labor do the same? The
answer comes clear and strong—be
cause the results would inevitably be
disastrous to itself. Political agita
tion will widen the breach of good
feeling between labor and capital. It
will embitter feeling on both sides.
Put the labor cause into the hands,
of a political party and you make'lt
the prey : f every low poll Leal art.
You sacrifice it to the greed of unscru-
pulous demagogues. You give over
the half-educated masses of, laboring
men to lie tools in the hands of those
who have no true sympathy with their
cause and seek only selfish ends. Then
the noble [imposes of the labor move
ment would turn to selfishness, its
high principles would sink into petty
meanness, its love of justice and right
into greed of gain and power. We
may as well make up our minds at
once that it needs something more
than party politics to solvi the great
problem of the relations of labor ami
capital.
Will it. be by legislation? No we
may secure the passage of good laws,
hut we cannot legislate the existing
state of affairs out of existence. *Bo
long as human nature remains what
It is, laws will have hut slight effect.
You cannot legislate greed and 'itisli
ness and cruelty out of men's hearts.
You cannot make men temperate, and
thrifty, and industrious by law. So
long as capitalists and laboring men
are whal they are, you will not ac
complish much by legislative means.
There is hut one agency which can
accomplish ibis cure. The gospel of
Christ is what the industrial world
ineeds aliovo all tilings. The compli
cations of this disease are too seri

that. We shudder ns we nuns whai
the Industrial world, would be today,
if it had not had nineteen centuries
of Christianity. We tremble at the
thought of what would come to pass,
if llilie gospel of were ,lixsf
today. Jesus Clirfsl is the people’s
friend. Banish him from tho indus
trial world, and you leave it barren,
and empty, and without hope. Leave
the toilers of the world no Saviour,
and you abandon lliom to black ,1<
.spHir. Let those who hold the wealth
and power of the world Ihiuk that they
have not a righteous judge, and God
pity Hie people who are under them.
Fall hack upon heathen standards of
morality, and the evils of today will
sink into insignificance in comparison
with the horrors into which you will
plunge the world. But give the world
a Saviour and tlm laboring man a
friend, and you change the whole
face of likings. Thou you can cry to
these hostile forces, "Sirs, ye are
brethren; why do ye wrong ouo to
another? Ye have a common Maslel
and a common Judge. Ye have mu
tual interests, it one of you suffer,
the other suffers yitli him, " These
are the principles, and they arc the
only principles, upon which the label
questions of the day can lie solved

Horn*? Hat e* Ic King: Solomon's Time
King Solomon was a sportsman, but
not a Nimrod. He was the ‘i'rst king in
Israel who introduced in his country
“horse races.” Dr. Jeillnek some year,
ago published an apeieut bcoklet of the ;
Talmudical era. wherein a full account |
of “Solomon’s races” is given. The Bi
ble says that King Solomon was the
owner of 10,000 stables. As the coun
try "’as divided into twelve military
provinces corresponding to the settle
ment of the twelve tribes, each gov
erned by a nazib (governor), who had
to provide for the king's wants and
needs a month in the year, so it may
be probable that the races were also
arranged; that each month a race took
place in the province under the patron
age of that governor whose monthly
service was on the list, while the Der
by once a year was run under the con
trol of King Solomon himself.
