At all times, in every locality, there has existed the individual known since the lime of our Lord as “Doubt ing Thomas.” lie, wished to he eon vinecd of ttlie truth ot' identity by the sense ol reeling tin* wound in Ch/ist’s side; our Doubtiug Thomas washes to see the actual completion of il pro jet ted improvement helbjo uWliiy oou viitced that it may bo actually intend ed. When Governor Clinton, of New York, advocated and worked for the Kne canal, that project was laughed at and named 'Clinton's ditch.” T’was saitl it might drain a portion of New York’s agricultural lands, hut would he a failure as a factor in New York's commerce. Wte have no need to slate how com pletely “Doubting Thomas” was in er ror in that case. When Col. IS. C. Mac hen came to itrunsw iek and unfolded hi. project for the building of t'ho tiruuswick and Jbrmingham railroad, did Ik- at llrst meet with encouragement, and co-op v ration? Doubling Thomas took a hand. Colonel Mdchcn's ideas were chi inericaJ; his methods were spectacu lar; his resources were visionary; and granting that he was personally stn ee:v, could lie succeed in starling the construction ol the railroad he sug gested? It might possibly he built as far ;is Thai!man, there connect with an old established line, and slop; thus allowing a north and south trunk line to get into Itruuswick with out allowing "Doubting Thomas” and others of that ilk, an opportunity to unload properly at a figure based upon the supposed advantage to said trunk line. What lias been the result? The It B. railroad was built to Thallmau; a new ciimpcimg line was opened from ihe uer'h ami west, it was extended to GHei man. opening to that point, the port of Brunswick for transhipment of lore-4 products; next Nichole and Douglas ware added lo Bnmswick's territory. Now, the eonneciiou with Ocilia is nearin;: completion, will he in operation shortly and Columbus the westernmost city of out state is asking that this (visionary?) road shall deviate Horn its direct line to Birmingham and pas- ithrough that thriving municipality. Chimerical ideas! Spectacular methods! Once or twice in a generation a man ap pears who uses them, anil who is lit ted to carry them out, being equipped by i>.:r,i Nature, with a plentiful sup ply ot grey matter under bis naf, aim boundless energy within nis Dame. i Such a Juan Is Colonel Machen; and not content with what has already been done; not content with opening up to Brunswick new territory from which it may receive forest products, ship agricultural implements and sup ply the necessities and luxuries of life; he has now allied himself with another enterprise, the benefits of which to our city will he incalculable. Tin Mohawk .Valley Steel and Wire company. 4 “Doubting Thomas” says it Is all a bluff. ' Was the Erie canal a bluff? Was the B. & B. It. K. a bluff? Let us look into the matter. Is the enterprise feasible? | Everyone will admit that in these t imes money may ho raised to finance piny project that will show a certain profit on the investment. Not even “Doubling Thomas” will assert that the limnufai'UitV of steel as carried on in the north, is umemunerative. Now if steel may be manufactured in the south at a profit, as it is in Birming ham, why not iri Brunswick? is it lieeause Birmingham is in the midst of the coal and iron district that Bruns wick will ho at a disadvantage? The interstate commerce commis sion regulates rates of freight. The manufactured product carries a much higher rate ol' freight than the raw material, just as our tariff laws im pose a inur.ii higher import duty upon manufactured goods than upon raw mm terial; therefore it costs less to haul coal and iron ore to l lie seaport than it does lo haul llie product of the mil Ik. Does any one doubt that the actual labor of manufacturing may lie done here as cheaply as in the interior? This gives Brunswick an ad vantage and the plant a profit on the mere item of transportation to the scacoast. Now as U> distribution of manufactured products. Since tho world began, water transportation lias ■been in every ease cheaper than any (lull could lie devised upon land, lias Itriinswiek got the facilities? Net "Doubting Thomas" speak! Here is something he may lay his hand upon. Where are the markets for manufac tured iron and steel? Egypt, South Africa, India, China, Australia and our new possessions the Philippines, with out taking into consideration the homo and Kuropeti/i markets will tax the out put of tho largest mills that can bo erected hero; and where in the wide world is there a location more fa vorably situated tor a shipping point. Now for tho personel id* the company started lo Imild what wilt he for llrunswick Ihe means of regener ation. Col. 10. C. Machen, who has promised much, and lias kept all of his promises. Senator McLaurin whose name is familiar to everyone who can read, in this country at least: whose course, under the liercest I light can in- thrown (that of political action), has secured the commen dation of an overwhelming majority of his countrymen. President Unisted, tile ■wide-awake energetic and practical; are the heads of ihe enterprise. The members of our city council, of Ihe hoard of comity commissioners and lasi inn not least, all of our most intelligent, energetic and prosperous merchants and bankers, members of our board of trade, have looked into Ihe project, analyzed arguments pro and con, and have emphatically en dorsed, commended and supported tho enterprise. Cot "Doubting Thomas" go way back and sit down. The Allania News is-’ growing at a rapid rate and is forging to the front rank of soul hern Journalism. That Brunswick city court judgship race seems to have been lost in the simile, or are ail three of tho candi dates taking it easy. Julm Temple Braves says no bache lor can he elected president. Are we lo draw Die deduction that the talen ted editor has been giving Willie llearsl some private advice. Whether or not ihepeople of Cos lambus get the B. W 11. road, they have displayed the proper spirit and the people oi Unit city have our best wishes in any and all things they un dertake. Brunswick has lots of pessimists who believe that the world is going to damnation bow wows at a rapid rate. It is a disease with them and they cannot neap it. uu uu, ,aiic them seriously.
