The News Publishing Company ile- Blres it to be distinctly understood that all legal advertisements must be paid for lu advance. We cannot af ford to devote our space to such ad vcrtlsements and wait on the courts fer the money. It Is safe to say that the Island will have h crowd tods v . Wliat does Cleveland want to be president for when flsli are biting? Editor Dick Grubb says lie loves Cleveland for 4be enemies lie thus made. The Alabama editors want Cleve land to be the nominee and these ed itors are not the only ones either, if.selecting a place youivuL ilo no!TpiwA.4,, era this section of the.state thorough ly. It looks like Jacksonville is to have a warm municipal election. This is a warm town and likes warm things, especially elections. Noth withstanding the fact that a fight was made on Heed Limoni he had no trouble in getting his seat in the senate. He is a republican If we must have a republican presi dent we would rather see John Hay there than any man In the opposite party. He is a statesman and a dip lomat. General Gordon suited the veterans during the war and he suits them how. lie was again elected Commander in Chief and he ran have it as long as lie cares to. It is a pity that there is such a raise in rate on everything at the great ex positions because this keeps many away who are really anxious to go. We learn that the gouging at St. Louis is as bad if not worse than it was at Buffalo. " You will find the ndvertisomout of every leading merchant In the New-* this morning. Read every one of them and if you are a prospective pur chaser it will save you money. The merchant who advertises is generally the place to do your buying. TEACH POLITENESS. The News hope® that the time is not far distant when the schools of the state win have politeness in their course of study because we can see every day where it is needed. AVe could call the names of a large number smooth face urchins in ibis very city who do not know the meaning of the word. We cannot blame them as much as we do their parents hut this is just what we are trying to drive at. What the child should learn at heme and does not could he taught him at school. The News is aware of the fact that thla is taught in the schools now but lo a very small extent. LEE’S FAREWELL ADDRESS. The farewell address of General Robert E. Lee is of peculiar interest right at this time. The address was delivered when it became evident to the great commander that he was overpowered and outnumbered but not whipped. The address is as followers: After four years of arduos service, marked by unsurpassed courage and fortitude, the army of northern Vir ginia lias been compelled to yield to overwhelming numbers and resuorces. 1 need not tell the survivors of so many hard fought battles, who have remained steadfast to the last, that 1 have consented to this result from no distrust of them, but feeling that valor and devotion could accomplish, nothing that, would compensate for the 10-s that would have attended the continuation of ilie contest. 1 have determined to avoid the useless sacri fice or those whose past services have I endeared them to their countrymen. By the terms of the agreement of ficers and men can return to (heir homes and remain lliere until ex changed. You will take with you the satisfaction that proceeds from the consciousness of duly iailhluUy per formed. I earnestly pray that a mer ciful God Will extend you His blessing ijikl protection. Willi an increa-ing admiration ol your constancy and devotion to your country, and grateful remembrance or your Rind and generous consideration of niy; elf, 1 Lid you an effectionate fa ''Well. TO PROTECT THE BIRDS. What the various woman’s societies and other organizations have failed to accomplish in the way of preventing the line of Birds in tho decoration of feminine headgear is about to he ef fected by the milliners themselves. Ily an argeoment which lias been made between the Millinery Mer chants.' Protective Association, of New York, and the Audubon society, there Is to he an absolute withdrawal from the trade and in the trimming of hats of (house species of birds ol which the Audubon societies and the American Ornithologists’ union have tiled so hum to suppress. > wilt ho formally announced to toe mil linery trade tomorrow, the members of the Millinery association pledge themselves to “abstain from from the importation, manufacture or sale of gulls, terns, grebes, humming birds, and song birds." These restrictions are to apply to the Birds irrespective of the country in which they have been killed or captured, and in January next the names of egrets, American pelicans of any species are to lie added to the prohibited list. The Audubon society on its part has agreed to endeavor to prevent all ille gal Interferences on the part of the game wardens with tlie millinery trade and promises to ust- its influence ag ainst any legislation restricting the manufacture or sale of fancy fea thers obtained from domestic fowls or the plumage of foreign birds other than those mentioned in the prescri lied list. DEMOCRACY’S PLIGHT. Rdltor Henry Mclntosh, of the es teemed Albany Heiald, does not seem to have a bright view of the outlook of dcmoeraYy. In a recent issue of 'his paper lie says: "Between Clevelandisui and goldbugism on one side and Bryan ism and free silveris.ni. on the other, the democratic parly seems in n fair way to go to the devil. “The two factious into -which the party was divided in IS9O are appar ently as wide apart as ever and so long as this state of looting exists in the democratic party the nomination for president will certainly bo an em pty honor." i The bad part of this is the fact that it is true it: every sense of (lie word. We can never hope to win un til we conic together and unless this is done before the election we have no chance whatever io put a president j in the white house. It looks very much like the petition of the residents in the section of New Town will 'he favorably considered By council. The News thinks it is a had * Idea to take the park and we hope the Board of Education will find some other place for the school building. BABY EASE.
