A great deal has been written alxmt t he diminution of commerce under I he American flag, but though pal riot, ism may deplore that said flag is so seldom displayed on blue water, it must not be forgotten that not only natural causes are responsible for this order of things. In the early ydavspf American history the shipowners were t lie wealthy class, and t hough the loading of one of these clipper ships, sa.v a vessel of two tons, had jo he done by manual labor, and every single package lalmriotmly hoist ed into her what was then considered immense hold, in t lie vernacular of the Captain, “there was money in it,"and one may be assured that as soon as there is a promise of there being as much profit In deep-sea commerce as there is in interprisesthat now engage I heir at tention, t he inhabitants of t his country will !■ quick to grasp then)- porl unity. In the days of yore when: thinking of profit or wealth the Amer ican instinctively looked oceanward, and the beautiful vessels of a couple of generations ago testified to our ingenuity and enteprise* With the bit roduet ion of railroads (tie people moved westward, where they found speedier avenues lo hi alt li, leav ing ocean t rade to foreigners. While I lie size and speed of ocean mail boats has lieen steadily increas ing, it seems now Ihat a limit has been reached, and as said increase, tx it 1 1 in length and speed, did not re sult in an increase in profits, the ship owners have naturally called a hall, and the largest ocean greyhound at present is expected to remain so with out achailenge for snipe t ime to conic. The coasting schooner also has heen grow ing rapidly, and ( tie Thomas W. Lawson is the only 7-master and Ihe largest sailing vessel afloat.
