The News Publishing Company de sires it to ho distinctly understood that all legal advertisements must lie paid for In advance. Wo cannot at ford to devote our space to such ad vertlsements and wait on the courts fer the money. Get to work on the county roads. They need it. A newspaper which Is started for political purposes never amounts to much. With Grover it seems that lie would rather be a good lisherman than ruler of Hie country. Brunswick knows very little about tornadoes hut she has had a little ex perience with storms. Brunswick can soon furnish Way cross with tho Von part of fllo cirs v When a man who Is cTmrgdd with selling liquor without a license Is convicted in Judge Parker's court lie may as well look out for trouble and all kntls ot it. GOOD REASONS. There lire many (Strong reasons why thoie is u great advantage in locating the steel plant in this city. The nolo article published in tho last number ol ' Dixie'’ tells ns a story which is lull of facts. ft will he remembered that this ar ticle was printed m the News columns some days ago, anu the A blowing paragraphs, taken lrom tins me read er can draw his own conclusion:: No soouer hud it oeen practically demonstrated that the south can man ufacture open-hearth steel at low cost anu knu perfect results, enabling it to successfully compete with the lies seiner steel ot I'iUsbutg, the Dane cit ies and the Maryland steel mills tanu that tact has brought Birmingham into greater prominence as a steel center) than practical and capital en terprise comes along with the an nouncement that they will manufac ture Bessemer steel from foreign ores, and open-hearth steel from Birmingham ores at the seaport ot Brunswick, Ua., and at u lower cost than at any plant iu iho United Statue. The idea is more than staggering — it appears uuwieldly. Yet, on the other baud, ail annylsis of the situa tion sheds much on the subject, anu leaves the scheme within the bounds of possibilities. A brief review of the iron aud steel industry of the country shows that its development has been of both pro cess aud location. l T p to IM>l the iron industry centered iu eastern Pennsylvania, but soon afterwards , moved westward to the Pittsburg dis trict, on aecouut of richer deposits ot Bessemer ores bordering on the Great Lakes, and particular on the Alesaba ridge. The Pittsburg district being the most available point for the as sembling of the ores and the fuel, aud fluxing materials of West Virginia and FeiuuylviuUa iu a tilth l period it became the raster of the American steel Industry; the ores traveling a distance of over 1,000 miles and the flnel atnl fluxes from 100 to 200 miles. Other plants were established on the lakes In order to reap the benefits of water rates for the marketing of their products, and many in the inter ior entirely abandoned their location to obtain such advantages. While this evolution was occuring in these eastern states, the develop ments in the iron industry of t tie south, centering at Birminham, had practically demonstrated that pig iron could he manufactured 'there at a lower cost than at any point on the globe; ores, fuel and fluxing mater ial were lapping Into each other, mak ing it possible for a few miles of rail road to assemble every product noons-j surv for the manufacture of iron, and os a result Birmingham set the mark et price of the world's pig iron. But In the meantime the rapid de velopment at Pittsburg in Bessemer steel manufacture (proving that steel could be made cheaper than ironl threw a damper over the south’s iron industry with the mines, foundries coal fields and influx-producing reg and rolling mills began to close down. The experiments at Chattanooga, followed by others at Birmingham:, soon relieved this tension, however, it being announced that while the southern ores contained too much phosphorus for the manufacture of steel by the Bessemer process, yet ..no results obtained by the open • learth process were entirely suecess ul practical and satisfactory lor all .uns of West Virginia and l’enusylva oinmereial demands, making it pos sible to compete with me Bessemer reel of Pitisourg. Thereupon the .ion and steel Industry at Birmingham A-gdu to show signs of life. Now Birmingham nas open-hearth plants producing You to hub ton per day, last j ear, lmis, producing o > . Ivb.f'bb tons Ihe promoters ot the Brunswick .efieiue believe that Brunswick is mure advantageously located than .jparruws l’omi lor this purpose, in mat tne uisiai.ee by rail Horn the ,ua to the Ciioasapealie Bay are aiioui the same as Horn the coal dis Yrtot tl Birmingham to Brunswick, %iT in'utir loriuer Ciuse Hie rairuad t-wWerscM vnp heavy grades, creattnfyWeesaive trans portation costs while urine latter case there are Uo uiouiuaius, insicau, ;,gut grades, affording cheaper and quicker uansportaUun. A further advantage claimed in ta vor of Brunswick s location is snown oy a comparison of the actual cost per lon per mile on the two routes, l'lio Pennsylvania roads uaui material .u oue-liUli of out cent per ion per mile, while tho cost on the southern naul is one-eighth of oue-cent per ton per mile. Winter climate on the c iicasapeake Bay, wuu its log uuu ice Jams, and the dangers ox Cape n.u leras outside, add freight and other expenses to the proposition. As to open-hearth steel, it is said tiie shorter haul on the timshed pro duct from Brunswick will offset the advantages held by other iron produc tug sections by reason of their prox imity to raw material, but less laver ably located with relation to the mar ket. IT IS NOT RIGHT. The News knows a citizen of this city wlio was summoned as a witness in a misdemeanor ease in the super ior court, and who went to the court t.ho having been summoned) oairly Monday morning aud remained there until Friday, when, tor tliai mailer, lo bo summoned and have to wait a week or ten days around the court house. Cases should be set for hearing at a certain time or on a certain day and not cause this great inconven ience to ilio public. Court adjourned. In the meantime iiis business suffered from neglect, out the courts do not seem to lake this matter into consideration. It is unreasonable and unjust for a business man or any man. THE DOWNING CO.
