M’LAURIN NOT RUINED.
The recent reports sent from New
York with refenence to the financial
ruination of Senator McLaurin seem
to have been exaggerated, and from
all indications the senator will save
<iuiie a little bunch of money. Tho
people of this city will he pleased to
hear of this us the senator made a
number of friends on his recent visit
to Brunswick. In connection with
this matter Hon. James S. Osborne
counsel for Mclsiurln, lias been ac
credited with the following state
ment in reference to the matter:
"Asa result of our continued in
vestigations as counsel for Sen
ator McLaurin, I can state that he
is not as near ruined ns was at first
reported, ills liability, however, is
fully $115,000.
“This sum is represented by $20,000
in cash, which my client advanced
to Frank A. Umstod, in addition lo
three different notes on which, ho
went security. One of those notes
is for $20,000, another for $25,000 and
another for $50,000.
“The first note fell due a few days
ago and was promptly met by Senator
McLaurin. who then secured an at

and the expenses of administration.
The gross personality amounted to $029

TODAY’S MEETING.
The meeting of the stockholders
of the B. & B. railroad, which is
scheduled to occur in this city to
day is a matter of general public
interest and will be very closely
watched by the people of Brunswick.
The recent changes in the official
family of the line in connection with
various rumors of all kinds, really
makes the meeting of more import
ance than it would be otherwise
It it not known to what extent
.he stockholders will attend, but it
' - been stated authoritatively that
mount will be represent
and by proxies, to trans
act such business as may come be
fore the meeting.
The day service of tho Mutual Tight
and Water company has been gi\
ing general satisfaction since the day
it started and those who have fans are
delighted with them. There is a de
mand for these “summer comforts”
which is growing rapidly.

During nr old home week celebra

their stoilee:
"Bill, do you remember breaking the
steers?” laughed Horace.
"Now. that’s between you nnd me,
Horae..”
"No secrets here,” said John. “Out
With It!”
"One summer one of Bill's steers got
mired in the swamp and was killed.
Bill wasn’t going to miss Ilie fun of
breaking the steers, so the next winter
he yoked himself up with the one that
was left. 1 met them coming down
over the crust like Sam Ilill. Bill
yelled belween gasps: ‘Stop ns! Stop

them in an angle of the wall. As soon
as Bill got breath enough lie said, Tor

Though Mercury Is one of the small
est of Ihe planets, It Is perhaps the
most troublesome to tho astronomer.
It lies so close to the sun that it Is
seen but seldom in comparison with
tlie other great planets. Its orbit Is
very Oeecntric, and it experiences dls
tui'liftnci’s by tlie attraction of other
bodies Ih a way not yet fully under
stood. A special difficulty lias also
been found In the attempt to place
Mercury in the weighing scales. We
can weigh the whole earth, we cun
weigh the sun, the moon and even
Jupiler and oilier planets, hut Mercury
presents difficulties of a peculiar char
acter. 1 ,0 Yerrler. however, succeeded
in devising a method of weighing it.
He demons!rated that our earth is
attracted by this planet, and he showed
how Ihe amount of attraction may be
disclosed In observations of the sun,
so that from an esninlmition of the ob-
Boi'vnlioiiH he made an approximate
determination of tho mass of Mercury.
1,0 Verrlc'r’s result Indicated that the
weight of the plan- I was about tlie fif
teonlli part of tint weight of tlie earth.
In oilier words, if our earth was placed
In a balance and lil'ieen globes, each
equal to Mercury, were laid In tho oth
er the scales would hang evenly.—"St.o
