The News Publishing Company de sires it to he distinctly understood that all legal advertisements must he paid for In advance. We cannot at ford to devote our space to such ad vtrtlsements aud wait on the courts fcr the mouey. While Oglethorpe hay ebbs and flows out prosperity is safe The man who is satisfied is cer tainly in if these days of hustle and Tinrif times There is no doubt but Unit John Hay one of the brainest men America ■ had. II seems like Senator McLaurin was not the only person faked by the steel plant people. The News received many com pi i moots on the editorial published Sun day about the steel plant. All of our financial institutions are In good shape and you know you can judge a city by such Institutions. II is indeed gratifying to see how the people if Ibis country are aiding those who lost their all in the recent storms and floods. Wv are glad to learn from thi report of the grand Jury that our convicts tire well cared for. II speaks good for the community. The people of lids eily should not he discouraged We tire all doing as well as oilier cities of the same si/a' in any part of the country. The typographical union of Char lotto, N C. has taken a lit 110 girl from a ooltin mill and will educate her. We would like lo see other tin ions follow this noble example. The coming convention of the Georgia Hanker's association promi ses to he the most successful over held by this organization. The News acknowledges the receipt of an in vitation. THE SMALL INDUSTRIES. Following from the Valdosta Times is appropriate right at tins time: “The big things from life often spring up from smaller ones. "Every big trust in the colt try today every mighty railroad system, every monster manufacturing plant had ori gin in some small thought, which ori ginated in (he mind of some small boy probably a ragged barefoot hoy at that. Prom such small beginnings tlie largest enterprises have grown. “The experience which comes with the development of small industries - into larger ones is one of the best as sell? which any enterprise can have “Not only are the small enterpris es important for tlie promises which tiny give for greater things in future, hnl .lie small industry is ready C*.o one whith adds wealth, trade, vvr.es a.id cniploym'M!. to the people who I make up tlie g"o£>t cities. "The profits from the aver atv small lir.lu ary Is greater than from ;hi l.ugei concern-} which go into the ma't.ct" of tiro world with their wares. "By confining themselves to a small area of trade, the small industry puts more life ad character and personal vigor in its work and its products are usually of higher work. "It caters to a better class of trade and it usually consumes products that are near at hand, thus offering en couragement to other lines of indus try. “Its employes feel more of an In terest In Its success Ilian in the great concerns which are operated like tria chines, without regard to the class of goods made. The owners of the large concerns hardly know the men in ttieir employ and there is little or no feel lug of sympathy between the employ er and employes. "Valdosta and the towns of south Georgia should use their efforts to have more small industries establish cd to consume our products. A doz on sugar refineries throughout the cane belt Is worth more than one big concern, which might consume a doz nn times the raw material. W< would prefer to see a score of broom factories offering encouragement U the growers of broom corn and sup plying the market with the manufae lured product than to see the branch of a trust operating In any town ol ibis section. “The small industry demands a much smaller outlay of capital than the lar gor ones and the profits from then are mtteh larger In proportion. "The enterprises whleh count mosl in the upbuilding of cites are tliosi wln li offer employment to Ihe highest class of labor and yet can be opera ted on Ihe smallest amount of capi tai. "The are tlie ones we must rely upon to make this a great city. Tin small industries- a diversity of then furnishing employment to skilled laborers. We have several of this kind and we need more.” GET SMALL INDUSTRIES. Now that It seems almost certain llinl Ihe steel plant Is not eumlng why not let us get together and try for some small industries? The same way the people of this eily got together on the steel plant nropositi.m just so they can do or others. We can Induce factories to come here and we may start some oursel ves and there are many that will pay here. Suppose we get together on some other proposition. Is a “Hummer.
