In the majority of eases, there fore, it is clear that the razor blade must ho baotorlologically clean—l. e., froo from the septic matter—which may ho attributed to the fact that probably it is dipped into hot sterilized water before use or else that the soap lather Is antiseptic. The latter expla nation seems the more probable of the two. The amount of soap rubbed on the skin is considerable if the shaving Is to he in any degree comfortable, and soap has considerable antiseptic power, n (i per cent solution being sufficient to destroy the typhoid bacillus. There can he little doubt, therefore, that the skin is rendered sterile by the liberal application of soup, and this fact is in favor of any out that may be made re maining healthy and without any seri ous consequence. In a word, soap iu the operation of shaving not only facilitates the proc ess, but plays the same valuable role when the shaver is unlucky enough to cut himself as does the antiseptic in surgery.-Lancet 1-OKt ArtN of Childhood. “Wo hour a good deal these days j about the lost arts. I wonder if tiie | world realizes that some of the most I precious arts of childhood are in dan- I ger of becoming extinct. How many ; boys today can make a kite properly hung and with a tail sufficient to bal ance it? How many boys can make a i bow with the ends nicely bent nnd worked down with a bit of broken glass? "I interviewed my young nephew the ■ other day and was thunderstruck to discover that lie knew nothing about it. Could lie make a water wheel, a wind mill, an elder popgun, a jack o' lantern, a buzz wheel, an air gun from a goose quill with a sliced potato for ammuni tion, a willow whistle, a squirt gun? No; he knew nothing about them. “ 'Hut surely.' I s.dd. almost pathetic ally. 'you can make a cornstalk liddle.' " *1 hi you mean a violin, uncle?’ “Then I gave It up. Trees Are the P'rsends of Men, All trees display constantly and broadly their nature and the marks of the class to which they belong. The oak, elm, willow, birch, lioech, together with poplar, chestnut and pine, are among our native born trees, mid those most familiar to us as the ancient land marks, remembered so well in child hood the mulberry, olive, ilex, hem lock, spruce, apple, pear anil cherry trees—go to make up I lie almost sacred circle of friends so dear to us because they are monuments of other and hap pier days. The homestead and Its associations recall all the dear old trees so fondly cherished In days “lang syne” and so dear to me now that it is pleasant to write what I know of their history, utility and why they are valuable as lumber or the more valuable mechan ical need which they meet. They all afford the human race a certain amount of reliable service and are the founda tion of many industries. They furnish the ships that cover the ocean with white sails and afford easy commu nication with ail nations. The arts and sciences depend upon them for substantial aid in completing palaces and churches and all the grand and lasting buildings which have dotted the earth with beautiful cities and Comfortable dwelling places for man. And thus wo find that tiie trees are really the steadfast and never failing friends of men.—Exchange. An Anocilotc of Brisrnolt, Though one of tiie most nervous sing ers that ever went before an audience, Brignoli in ids way was one of the most conscientious. He refused to sing if he did not feel that Ills voice was in a condition to do justice to the song and to liiius if. He was a firm believer in lionieopa Lliy and was never without two small vials, one contain ing bryonia and the other spongia, which lie used alternately. His body servant, Barbageiata, usually admin istered the drug. On one occasion it happened that Barbageiata gave him a larger quantity of bryonia than he had asked for, but, like the f.-iilhOil s*>r ant that be was. he informed his masi-r of the mistake. Brignoli was furious. lie- thought lie was a dead man. lie raved and storm-; cd and swore as only lie could swear. Barbageiata, thinking to relieve liis mind, swallowed tiie entire contents of the vial. “\ou see. Si nor Brignoli, there is no' barm in the medicine," he said. 1 “All, misery!" cried Brignoli, forget-' ting his own danger at once, “i'ou are a dead man! What have you done?" All the doctors iu the m-ighhirhood were sent for, and all had to testify that the drug was harmless before! Brignoli would hc-lieve that Barliage- I lata could survive. Tile sign of addition is derived from the initial letter of the word “plus.” In making the capital letter it was made more and more carelessly until the top part of the “p” was finally placed near the center! hence the plus sign, as we know it, was gradually reached. The sign of subtraction was derived from Lhu word “minus.” The word was first contracted in in. n. s. witli a hori zontal line above to indicate that some of the letters had been left out. At last the letters were omitted altogether, leaving only the short line. The multiplication sign was obtained by changing the plus sign into the tet ter “x.” This was done because mul tiplication is hut a shorter form of ad dition. - Division was formerly Indicated by placing the dividend above a horiz.ontul line and the divisor below, in order to save space in printing the dividend was placed to tlio left and the divisor to the right. After years of “evolution” the two "d’s” were omitted altogether, and simple dots set in the place of each. As with the others, the radical sigu was derived from the initial letter of the word “radix.” The sigu of equality was first used in the year 1557 by n sharp mathema tician, who substituted it to avoid fre quently repeating the words "equal to.” A I’lcnimiit Old Leg;eiul. Many years ago, sailing from Con stantinople to Marseilles, we passed close under the lee of Stromboli, off the north coast of Sicily. The irrecon- cilnble old volcano was not in active eruption, hut from the crater a reddish smoke was rising, while from the fis sures in its sides burst now and again tongues of lurid flame. “Ah,” observed a sailor—the vessel was au English one—“ Old Booty is at it ngain!” So far as I can remember there is a legend that one Captain Booty, a mas ter mariner trading to the Mediter ranean in the seventeenth century, be came so notorious for drinking and swearing that lie was seized upon by the fiend and carried off to the interior of Stromboli, from which he has con tinued ever since to utter profane lan guage by means of tongues of lire and puffs of smoke. This, however, did not prevent the ghost of the profane skipper from frightening his widow, who resided in Lower Thames street, half out of her senses by appearing to her at supper time smelling strong ly of brimstone.—London Times.
