A Segtectcd Clasa.
When looking around to discover so
cial grievances or to find subjects for
philanthropic work, why has no one
thought of the hotel maids and wait
ers? Tlieir livt“3 are hard, for they
have long hours and must be on duty
both early and late. Their time oft i>
taken in snatches, and they seldom gey
a whole day.
A kind lady, observing this at a ho
tel, asked her husband to give his morn
ing paper every day to the man who
waited at their table. . The gratitude
expressed showed how tedious the mar
found his idle time when he was “on
duty,” but had nothing to do and noth
ing to read.
A book or paper to a chambermaid,
haliboy or elevator hoy is often more
gratefully received than the ever wel
come tip.
A little consideration as to unusual
demands meets with equal apprecia
tion. Any one who has traveled much
and not kept, his eyes shut soon learns
that hotel work is hurd for those who
do it regularly and continuously and
soon becomes willing to he loss exact
ing and more aware of certain needs in
those who serve which cannot bo sup
plied by gifts of money. A little per
sonal Interest is worth much more in
many cases.—Philadelphia Ledger.
Tin* Iran Crown.
The “iron crown,” which worked up
the minds of the people of the middle
ages to such an extent as final!; ' ne
come an object of worship, is. in fact,
a gckl crown, the secret magic of the
name resting on the tradition that the
inside ring of iron was made from the
nai.s which were driven through the
hands of Jesus at the time of the cm
eifixion.
But little is known concerning the
history of the iron crown until after
the coronation of Agiluif, king of the
Lombards. It is generally believed that
It was made for that monarch in the
year 591. It was used by Charlemagne
and by all the after emperors of France,
who were kings of the Lombards. Na
poleon put it on liis head when he was
in Milan in 189(5, saying, “God hath
given it to me.”
This celebrated relic is now in Na
ples among the state jewels. It was
captured and taken by the Austrians to
Vienna in 1859, but was returned to It
aly in 1806. Believers in the sacred
hoop of iron inside the crown point to
the fact that there is not a speck of
rust upon it. although nearly 2,Out?
years old.—Exchange.
Mofl!fytal Bow.
Travelers received by the sultan of
Morocco were at one time required to
make the customary obeisance of the
country, but that ceremonial is now
omitted. The reason, according to La
dy Grove in her “Seventy-one Days’
Camping,” goes hack to a slight social
awkwardness involved in carrying out
that prescription
A distinguished naturalist had been
presented to the sultan, and as ha
bowed ids head to the ground, instead
of supporting himself with his hands,
he placed them behind his hack; con
sequently his forehead came against
tlie marble Poor with a loud hang, and
he bad some difficulty in recovering
himself.
The sultan was amazed. “Has not
the gentleman had the honor of enter
ing the presence of iiis own sovereign
he asked another visitor inter.
“Probably he lias had that honor,
your majesty,” was the answer.
“Then,” said the sultan, “he should
have learned the art of making saluta
tions without tile occurrence of such
accidents.”
Thereupon Ids majesty learned with
astonishment that tills lowly form of
obeisance is not observed at European
courts, and he immediately decreed
that none but the usual customs de
manded by European sovereigns should
be required of Europeans when they
entered or left ids presence.
A Close Combination.
“They can get up combinations in the
west to beat the band,” said a Phila
delphia drummer who had come in off
a trip and had a shortage to explain.
“In a town in western lowa I had a
difference of opinion with a landlord
and called him a liar. He was a depu
ty sheriff, and he arrested me. His
brother was prosecuting attorney, and
he was against me. The judge was
his brother-in-law, and he Tried the
ease. I said I’d take ten days in jail
sooner than pay the fine, but when I
came to be locked up the jailer said to
me:
“ ‘You’d better pay. I’m the father
in-law of the judge, o?d it will be my
duty to put you in a cell with a pris
oner wlio’s gone crazy and wants to
kill somebody.’
“I paid and was released,” said the
drummer, “hut I wanted revenge. 1
went to the only lawyer in town with
a reputation and stilted my case ao4
asked him to take it
