ALTAMAHA NAVIGATION.
. The News has always been of the
opinion that a steamboat line between
points on the Altamaha river would
pay, provided however, that the line
would be operated for the purpose of
paying dividends to its stockholders
and not for the sole purpose of forc
ing the railroads to compete with the
j steamboat line.
If the merchants and business men
will make nip their minds to patronize
the steamboats there Ir no doubt in
the. world liut that It would prove a
paying Industry.
Following from the Macon Tele
graph will he Interesting:
A definite movement litis been made
under the auspices of the chamber of
’commerce to Inaugurate a river trans
portation line. A st ram boat of 250
tons burthen, loaded with scrap iron
and shingles, Ik on its way to Macon.
It lft Temperance landing, below
Hawkinsvllle, Saturday night.
While it Is an experimental venture
on the part of the owner, it will lead
to Important results. Tho shippers
of Macon have been anxious for a long
time to utilize the navigable advan
tages of the Ocmulgee river to secure
rail and water line freight rates. They
believe that Macon’s commercial fit
tore will he favorably determined, if
t,mil a. result can he attained.
The government has expended thou
sail: H of dollars In the past four years
to improve the channel of the river,
so io> to enable boats to ply Ihe river
the year round between Maeon and tho
the Altamaha.
'Hie government engineers have
given llie assurance that three feet
of water can he maintained with the
system of Jetties which have been
built at summer stage of the river.
Captain I. 11 English has been a
consistent advocate of river navigation
lie says: “It. is the key to the sit
uation that, confronts Macon" He
maintains that it will Increase tin
volume of traffic to he distributed
form Macon, and more Ilian compen
sate the railroads for reducing rates.
'Hie inauguration of a river trans
portation line is not anew project. In
1897 men prominently identified with
the chamber of commerce took up
the project and through their exer
tions the "City of Macon" was built
and the feasibility of running steam
txvata ou the demon''
si rated. W
It was through the energetic persist
ence of the same men that an appro
priation of $158,000 was secured ior
the permanent improvement of the
river channel thus laying the founda
tion for a successful river transpor
lation line.
The above was printed in our lo
cal news columns yesterday and it
shows llial the government nas taken
a band In deepening the river and put
ting it in simple for navigation all llio
year round.
Brunswick will come In for the
lion's share of this business because
it Is the distributing lailnt. Goods
which reach here by steamer from the
north will he unloaded here anil trims
lerred lo the Altuiuaha steamers and
goods for llie north will he taken from
the Altanialia steamers and placed
on board the northern ship.-- u ..
tie seen here that we will do the hand
ling of all the freight.
And there is another place where
wo would come In. It would open up
anew line to our mereltauls and they
would invade ibis territory, selling
thousands of dollars worth of goods
io the people along tho river routes
and lliose wlu could have tlielr goods
iransleuTed lroiu the steamers to Uie
ears.
There are many other reasons why
nope that it will mean a great deal
tins Hue will help ns anil we sincerly
more Ilian llie most sanguine expects.
President Roosevelt is not doing
much "probing" in the postoltice stem.
Wo are all-aid tile president spoke be
fore he talked lo his political advisers
and ol course a "piobe would he Ui
