It is to Mr. Isaac Jiolden, member of
parliament, that we owe the invention
of the lucifer match. This discovery
was, he himself lias told us, the result
of a happy thought. “In the morning
I used to get up at 4 o’clock in order to
pursue my studies, and I used at that
time the flint and steel, the use of
which 1 found a very great inconven
ience. Of course I knew, as other
chemists did. the explosive material
that was necessary in order to produce
instantaneous light, but it way very
difficult to obtain a light on wood by
that explosive material, and the idea
occurred to me to put sulphur under
the explosive mixture. I did that and
showed it in my next lecture on chem
istry. a course of which I was deliver
ing at a large academy.
“There was,” added Mr. Holden, “a
young mail in tile room whose father
was a chemist in London, and he im
mediately wrote to his father about it.
and shortly afterward lucifer matches
were Issued to the world. 1 believe
that was the first occasion tlmt we had
foe present lucifer match. I was urged
to go and take out a pntedt immediate
ly. but. t thought it was so small a mat
ter and it cost me so little labor that I
did not think It proper lo go anil get a
patent: otherwise 1 have no doubt it
would have been very profitable.”
liv One Arm.
“It is a matter of surprise to me.” re
marked a man who is a keen observer,
recently, “that baif the children of this
country do not grow up minus an
arm.”
"But wherefore?” asked the person
to whom lie was speaking.
“Here is an illustration.” continued
the first speaker. "Do you see that
woman walking with a little child?
Now. notice her when slie crosses the '
street.”
At the crossing the woman lifted the
child by oi ■ arm. It dangled in the
air, and its feel did not touch the earth
until it was across the street, when the
mother dropped it on the sidewalk.
“Well, the linn held, didn't it?”
“But." continued tin philosopher, “1
was afraid at one time it would be,
wrenched from its socket. Now, that'
Is a sight you can witness every hour
In tlie day -mothers dragging children
out of street cars, across the streets or
up a flight of stairs by one arm. 1
wonder how the mothers would like it
if a being four times is large as them
selves should suddenly swoop down
and lift them by oue arm. I'd like to
see It tried once. I .iust. would.”
J. A. McDuffie leaves this morning
on a short business trip to Savan
uah.
