THE BRUNSWICK DAILY NEWS.
Oi'tAin of .Ouliirmaltoul Slgina,
The sign of addition is derived from
the initial letter of the word “plus.”
In making the capital letter it was
made more and more carelessly until
iha ton part of the “p” was finally
placed near the center; hence the pins
sign, its we know it, was gradually
reached.
The sign of subtraction was derived
from the word “minus.” The word was
first contracted in nt. n. s. with a hori
zontal line above to indicate that some
of the letters bad been left out. At last
the letters were omitted altogether,
leaving only the short line.
The multiplication sign was obtained
by changing the plus sign into tlie let
ter Tins was done because mul
tiplication is but a shorter form of ad
dition.
Division was formerly indicated by
placing tiie dividend above a horizontal
line and the divisor below, lu order to
save space in printing the dividend was
placed to the left nnd the divisor 10 the
right. After years of "evolution" the
fiVo “d’s” were omitted altogether, and
simple dots set in the place of each. As
with the others, the radical sign was
derived .from the ,-vino) |eiu.*r of the
word “radix."
The sign of equably was first used
in the year 1557 by a sharp mathema
tician, who substituted if to avoid fre
quently repealing tie- woids “equal to."
A Pleasant Old Leg-end.
Many years ago, sailing from Con
stantinople to Marseilles, we passed
close under the lee of Stromboli, off
the north coiut of Sicily. The irrecon
cilable old volcano was not in active
eruption, bin from tin- crater a reddish
smoke v.-as rising, widle from the fis
sures in its sides burst now and again
tongues of lurid tiame. "All,” observed
a sailor the vessel was an English
one—"Oid Booty is at it again!” So
far as I can* remember there is a
legend that one Captain Booty, a mas
ter mariner trading to the Mediter
ranean in the seventeenth century, be
came so notorious for drinking and
swearing that he was seized upon by
the lie;:,] and carried oil 10 tile interior
of Stromboli. from which be has con
tinued ever since to utter profane lan
guage by means of tongues of tire and
puffs .of smoke. This, however, did
not prevent the. ghost of the profane
