A pretty lift le cape of white raw silk, cut wit h a round neck and made with a drape ry, half sleeves is edged with a hand of white pompadour ribbon, and makes a very effective little evening wrap. • • • Cut-out, designs in linen, button holed and appliqued upon shirts and waists is one of the newest whlmples. A plain white linen, or even a silk waist, trimmed in clover leaves of green linen, tlie shaping lit ted in with embroidery stitch, is very fetching. Tlie clover leaves may outline tlie yoke, trim the sleeves and a four-leaf clover givesan original touch to the belt in front, Delicate pink wild roses also make an effective t rimming. These may be left plain or embroitler ied with a rose center in yellow French knots. „ The strongest and best constructed book of the year is ‘‘Lady Rose’s Daughter,” which has been out, in book form for some time, after run ning serially in Harper’s Magazine. This brilliant and delightful love story and character study is by Mrs. Humphrey Ward, who easily holds first place among the novelists of the day. The story deals with English high life, and the central character, Julie Lelireton, is the most vivid and convincing character of recent fiction. With all her faults, her contradic t ions, her weakness, (results of hered ity and environment, the peculiar cir cumstances that surrounded her,) Julie Le lire!on is a fascinating, win some personality, who holds the read er’s sympathy and affection. Jacob Delatield, ttie lieto, is real and con vincing. A tine type, a great and no ble character, splendidly drawn, with nothing strained or overdrawn in his delineation. Each character, from (fid Lady Henry, the tyrautcal grande dame, jealous of her supremacy in her circle of old friends, to the pretty, loyal little Duchess, the sure hand of the writer is manifested in the crystal clearness and unwaveringlidelity w ith which eacli is drawn. Mrs. Ward’s masterly descriptions of tire setting of her story are here, as in all her books, a joy to the reader who possesses tile artistic sense. Her genius for analysis and probing of motives and characteristics is marvelous. This book is real literature and will stand all tests, even that of time. J.t is a real juy to the purest, the fastid ious reader; and Hie exquisite style, tine literary technique, and other good points that mark Mrs. Ward’s book, make tlie reading ol it a delight.
