Brunswick’s July Shipping record
Is one ot whicbi we should ail be
proud.
There is plenty of good lurming
laud in this section. Ail we need Is

The railroads, all throe ol thorn,
should jolu and work tor the iner

Roosevelt is not diving lur the hot

With that SSO OUU appropriation

Bryan lias not reached his destina

will have lots of fun when he lands.
All Brunswick should join in and

DESERT AND LONELY.
Of nil the land over which oui
starry flag floats there Is none more
utterly desert, lonely, desolate and
forbidding than the borax regions of
Nevada and California, says Mines
and Minerals. In the summer months
the heat is lnteiises and unbearable,
with vary little water, grass or fuo.
to supply the wants of man and
beast, in winter high winds carry
clouds of dust across these deserts
and at times the cold is a bitter as
summer s heat Is unbearable The
favorable regions for its existence,
In paying quantities, occur most gvu
erally where the old dry lakes are
found, situated iu volcanic regions.
A strange feature about the borax is
that regious producing it have iu no
case as yet been exhausted, the min
cral iu the old lake regions coatinu
lug to send up borax from below as
an alkaloid, and where worked ibis
year it may he worked again the year
following. Especially If there he
any precipitation of snow or rain at
any time of the year, the waters will
penetrate the soil and produce chemi
cal action that brings the borax, tu
either a powdered or crystalled
utc, to the surface.
A MORAL.
The arrest of the two young men,
who came to this city during the past
week and worked a bunco advertis
ing scheme on a number of the nijOEt
prominent merchants of the city,
gives us a very good theme this
morning.
It is one of those practical lessons
from commercial life, indicating how
natural is I lie impulse of local peo
ple to patronize strangers and fakes,
in preference to concerns at homo
doing business on legal anil business
principles.
Here comes along a couple of
rigid smart fellows, who sec an op
liortunity to make a dollar; on the
advertising plan andj they sat to
work, and had it not been lor Ihe
merest accident would have suceeded
in reaping a rigid good harvest out
of the in*-rch ii.nl of the city.
The moral, and as small as the In
stance in case may bo, it is a good
one, is simply this: Patronize home
industries, a theme as old as the laws
of the Meiles and the Persians, bid
none the less true for its age.
Here in Brunswick, we have n num
ber of constituted advertising ugen
eies, the press, (tie bill-boards, the
joii office doing circular work and
numbers of others.. Now, in the
future when you want aderlising, con
suit one of the homle affairs, who live
in your midst and purchase your
wares
Do not lie carried away wills the
stories of itiimrants, who go from
town to town and get in their little
work.
Patronize home industries!
A CARNIVAL EDITION.
On the Sunday preceding Ihe coin
ing merchants' carnival. The News
will issue a special carnival edition.
,This paper wilt he distributed all
over the territory from which the
crowds will come and will offer a
splendid advertising medium to the
merchants of (lie city.
in addition, it will contain some
valuable in format ion for the visitors
that will serve lo make it a very
valuable paper for both those who
come and the people of this city as
well.
A News representative will cal! on
llic merchants Monday morning and
it is jusl as well to engage advertis
ing spar e at once and thus get the
benefit of a good position.
Ob.lluat-r.
“Out' <tf lie most remarkable cases
In my experience,” sin It 1 at country doc
tor, "was mi /old woman In a tidier
man’s hut £P the Carolina shore. It
was a long. dreary drive of ten miles,
anti when I ,rt ttehed the place 1 found
that the only occupant besides the Rich
woman was it skit of a girl, who was
utterly worn out by weeks of can' and
nursing. I examined the patient and
found every sign of early dissolution.
Her pulse was growing feebler, and It
was only a question of a few hours. 1n
my mltul, before the end would come.
The idea of file girl being left alone 111
that lies touched mo, and I decided to
remaJn with her, oven though the un
expected happened and the old Indy
lived through the night. The men of
the hut were fishermen, and they
would probably he hack the next day.
So I sat with the girl In the corner of
the room and told her what i Intended
to do.
“ ‘Won't she get well?' asked the girl
after t had explained as tnerefftilly ns
I could.
“ 'No.' I replied, 'she will not gel
well. She will die tonight.’
".fust then there was a feeble move
ment on the bed, and n thin, angry
voice dgnvlef, out: ‘lt ain't so. 1 won’t
die. 1 expact to egt the goose tUai
eats the grass off of your grave.’
“Oh, vvs. She's quite well now, and
she does not hosllatc to toil me how
much she likes goose" Philadelphia
I-edger.
Ulcketl. and Ills Work.
I.lglit Is thrown upon the unfinished
condition of Dickens' ''Mystery of Kd
win Drood" by the following story,
told by n surviving friend:
“I ventured to ask him what method
lie pursued In the composition of works
and if they were all completed before
going to press. 'H.v no means,’ he re
plied. 'They ace not written beyond
the part that is to be published at a
given time. But the plot, the motive
of the book. Is always perfected in my
brain for a long time before 1 take up
tuy pen, V add a great deg! to tbs
original Idea ns 1 work on, but as I
always know the end of the beginning
I can safely i-ouuult my work lu parts
to the press.' "
” ‘But suppose,’ I stammered, with
lust a little awe aad wonderment Iti
aiy voice (only the temerity of youth
could have Induced me to say such a
thing), 'suppose you died before all
your work was written?'"
•“A-h" he said, and paused, then
added. 'That has occurred to me at
times.' and again tile long, future
piercing look seemed to he penetrating
the golden haze. Then he turned hit
kindly glance on me and said cheerful
ly, 'One can only work on. you know
work while it is day.’"
