CASSIUS M. CLAY.
Cassius M Clay, the “sago of White-
Jia.ll," whose death was announced
last week, was one of the striking
hgures lu American politics half a
century ago. Although a Kentuckian
aud the son of slave hold lug parents,
he came under the influence of Will
lam Lloyd Garrison while a student
#t Yale, amt for 111) years was one
of the stoutest anti slavery men In
the west, tie was a vigorous whig,
supporting General llarrison aim
'Taylor, and with the birth of the
republican party and the uuuiiiwUon
of Fremont naturally became one 01
tUw prominent leaders of mat oigiun
satlon. He was always a strong anti
slavery mail and one ot the tlrst to ad
vocale emancipation. This made him
unpopular among many of the slave
holding people or his native mate
hut his intent) to principal was pro
nouncod, and her never wavered in
his support of the idea ot tree do m
tor the blacks, and later of the cause
ot the Union.
When Lincoln was elected pic 1
dent Clay was appointed minister to
Russia, and remained there eight
years, with the exception of a year
in the army. He became dissatis
fied with the Grant administration
and joined, the Greeley movement,
and later afiHatt-d with thu democrat
to party. Ilia per social adtnltrat ion
for Mr. Blaine led him to support
thu latter lu the campaign ot ISM
but with this exception he was a con
sistent and persistent democrat.
He was eone of the strong, rugged
characters of his time, and one of

A Flight of Bird*.
A flight of birds changed the histor
of America under the following circuu
stances When Columbus sailed west
ward over the unknown Atlantic, b-t
expected to reach Zipangu (Japan .
After several days’ sail frem Corners'.,
one of the Canary islands', he became
uneasy at not discovering Zipangu,
which, according to his reckoning
should hive been 21 tS nautical miles
more to the east. After a long discus
sion he yielded to the opinion of Mar
tin Alonzo Tinzou. the commander of
the rintii. and steered to the south
west. Pinzffli was guided in his opin
ion by a flight of parrots toward the
southwest. The effect of this change
in his course curiously exemplifies the
hill nonce of apparently trivial events
In tho world’s affairs. Had Columbus
kept his original route he would have
entered the gulf stream, reached the
coast of Florida and then probably
been carried to Cape Hatteras and Vir
ginia. The result would probably have
been to give the present United "States
a Roman Catholic Spanish population
Instead of a Protestant English one, a
circumstance of immeasurable impor
tance. “Never.” wrote Humboldt, “had
the flight of birds more important
consequences.” It may be said to have
determined the first settlements on the
new continent and Its distribution be
tween the Latin and Germanic races.—
