The Massachusetts bureau of sta tistics has been studying the women hvho work with amazing results. For instance. In that state more than 100,000 factory workers arc wo men of varying ages. There are 7!) - 000 servants and 20,000 women prac tice professions. All (he time ihcy are Invading the field hitherto oc cupied by men alone. There are 727 women employed a messengers and errand girls. 47 as hackdrivers, 7 as marble cutters, jn as hrlckmasons and fi as butcher: More than 8R per cent of the wo men are unmarried. The figures sire not satlsfact .r\ That women should enter trade , lh.it call for great animal strength is a shock. It doesn’t seem right. No one wants the girls of Amer. a to grow up into pale nonentities. Their health, ambition and willing!) ! *ri labor calls for admiration. But think of your mother as a butcher, or a bricklayer stonecutter, or perched oil the seat of a hack driving a span of horses iin p'tblib Yes, it hurts. The world wants more good and mothers. It wants women id L ei that motherhood Is n goal, and work for wages in store or factory, or a professional career, are life in .'ideal • of loss importance than the making of homes. The woman who argues a cane he fore a jury isn’t barred from wife hood. The gild who stands behind a counter or at a loom often graduates into a home of her own, and that i as it should be. . ft. will be a sorry day if woman'll In dependence ever takes the i* 1 • id good old-fashioned love, eourlsliip and marriage., Perhaps the day will never come, but remember—-over S8 per cent cl tlw* women workers of Massachusetts are unmarried. THE CARDINALS. In a sermon preached in Baltimore last Sunday, the llov. Father (Russell protested against the reilecihlis that; wore cast by the tenoral pdtfflo upon the cardinals in tbe matter oi the pa pul election. “If wo are to belii v, the rports that have been circulatetl, Hold Father Russell, \“wc shuuhl imagine that those cardinals are in spired with motiives of personal am bition, to satisfy which they are not averse to becoming intriguers, will pullers and political schemers, ll these men arc such as they are reptv bcntcd too often, we may he sure they never would have attained tin position of trust they hold. An Irish legend has it that a good fairy once visited an old couple and’ promised them that any three wishes they would make would lie granted. After racking their brains for some time in an endeavor to discover what they desired most the couple decided to visit the county fair to see if some thing there would suggest what they wanted. They did so, aud after ram bling around all day and not seeing anything that exactly suited them toward evening they found them selves before a display of kitchen utensils. Among them was a soup la file. cheap, but likely to appeal to a womau, so the old woman in an ab sent moment said, “Oh, I wish I had one of those,” and immediately she had It. The old man was so enraged because his wife had thoughtlessly thrown away one valuable wish that he retorted, “I wish that was stuck down your throat,” and immediately this was done. Thereupon he was at once sorry at what lie wished, and the only thing left to do was to wish the ladle out again.
