I A sigh of relief: the legislature has adjourned. We are to have a state hoard of health. Excellent idea. Allagood should have been named Aliabrute. The later suits him better. Warden Allagood should not be hei>t in ‘.he employ ol the state au hour longer. The Aurerlcus i'ress Is getting up a monster petition asking the goveruoi to pardon Munite Uocris. The Memphis Commercial Appeal asks, "Shall women wear socks?” To which the Amerleus Timos-Kocordoi replies: "This is an important lines lion. The women will wear wlrat tuu.v please. Mere hue lias nothing to do with it —except. possibly, to pay tho hills.” As tho editor of the Times Recorder is a woman, this may be re garded as linal and authoritative. - Augusta Chronicle. SET IT TO WORKING. 'lthe quicker we get Mr. Calvin’s vagrancy bill, as amended by the son ate, in working order, the quicker shall we come into a comparatively happy btutu of affairs. The measure is one of if not quite the best and most important adopted art this session of tho legislature. Sim ple on tho face of it the bill really solves lu part both tho child taooi question and tli negro question. The provision which seeks to pro vent a parent from, hiring out uiinui children and living on tiro proceeds of tlielr wages strikes almost at the very root of the child labor troubles, nud while of curse tlmt single para graph will not accomplish the reform which Mr. Huston’s deceased hill was designed to work, it will accomjlisk no small portion f tt. More important still Is the effort the measure will have upon the won t work negves. Saturday the Shamrock HI. had her last try out with the shamrock I. The first race is now less than two weeks away, and unless some mishap prevents the boats will begin their con tests on Trursday, Aug. 20. As thy- date of the contest ap proaches tllie interest increases. It is safe to sav that the Internation al rec.es of 19"3 will he the most nterestlng cxeii - e and close of all the matches yet held. Eleven times before have Hi Britishers attempted ot capture the America’s cup, the pride of the American yaehtmon, and eleven tine.-a they f.'iiic;! . Each of the last few times they have tried, however, they have come closer to winning the coveted trophy,, and < *>i l ime it seems that the contest will lie closer than ever. The feature of the year’s racing is similarity of the competing yachts The experience of the designers gained in the contests from 1851, when the America won (lie cup and there was rwx second down to 1901. when the Shamrock I. and Constitution were very nearly alike, has shown them just what, model of boat can do best under t)(o regulations laid down for contest ants for title cup. This has brought thmem to the deep, heavy keel and the long over hang anr lines In both chal lenger and defender are very nearly similar. Five races In all will be sailed on alternate days, beginning August 20. Three races out of five will decldetbe winner. Each race will started from Sandy Hook lightship. The course will he over a triangle, each side of wilt 101 lis ten miles in length, or a Ileal to windward of 15 miles and re turn, depending on the direction ol the wind. Tile best qualities of both yachts will llms lie shown on all points ol scailing. , The lime limit lor each race is live and a hull hours.
