The steamer Einmerline will make the last Sunday trip to Cumberland tomorrow. Most of the river boats have been in port during the storm rumor. Some few of them went out yesterday. The Savannah News of yesterday said: The Italian hark Martinin was seized yesterday on a libel filed by Garrard & Meldglm, proctors for the Hilton & Dodge Lumber Company and Thomas .1. O’Brien, master of the steam tug Iris, which brought the bark into port. Salvage claims have been instituted, as it was alleged that without the assistance of the tug Iris, the bark, which was in distress, could never have reached port. On the morning of August 4, the tug put to sea from Darien in search of the Mar tinin, which was reported in distress. When found the craft was badly dis mantled. Her foremost, main top gallantmast, and mizzenmast wen gone, and she was leaking badly. • An agreement wa,s roached and the dis abled boat brought safely into port, for which Che claims have been made. The bark and cargo are valued at $20,000. Saving Seed. TVhea the pea crop is grown be iween corn rows, or is fairly ripe be fore it is grazed, or remains on th ground for a winter cover, it Is usu ally good economy to gather the seed farmers prefer the plan of stor ing the unshelled pods through the winter, which in a measure, though not completely, protects ths seed from weevil. Some delay cutting un til a considerable proportion ot the pod are ripe, depending on the peae shelled in hauling and found in the bottom of the mow for a seed sup ply for the next crop. The yield of seed varies greatly. If grown be tween corn rows and picked only once, It varis# !. ;in 6 to 10 bushels per acre; but ii* grownji.Sone and al lowed to fully mature, ahji if all seed are saved, the yield averages from 20 to 30 bushels per acre. If seed is stored, injury to It from the weevil can be pre vented by treating the seed with carbon bisulphide before threshing and storing. The bisulphide will not in jure the peas for planting or for ta ble use, but must be kept away from any Are, because it is very inflamma ble. No lighted lantern or pipe sjhculd be carried into the building where the seed ia stored until the peculiar cdor of the bisulphide has disappear ed, which will he in about three days. GA. DEPT. OF AGRICULTURE. Agriculture For the Common Schools. Many communications have come to this Department in recent years asking us to recommend a work suitable as a textbook on agriculture with the view of having it introduced into the carriculum of our common schools and also from many farmer* desiring a work on general agricul ture in the south. Until recently wa have had nothing of that kind prepared by any of our own people, who are best ae. quallited with the needs of the farm ers of Georgia and neighboring South ern States. This department sug gested to Professor J. B. Hunnicutt, editor of The Southern Cultivator, the preparation of a work of this kind, and invited the cooperation of Profoa sor G. R. Glenn at that time School Commissioner of the State of Georgia Such a work b; Professor Hunnicutt has just been issued from the pros, of the Foot* & Davies Publishing Cos., of Atlanta, and is, therefore, a genm ine home production, well adapted to the farmer boys and girls of the South. ' Every farmer should take pride it. his profession; for without such a sentiment he cannot do his best work. By pursuing proper methods he can instill the same sentiment into his children, so that they will find both pleasure and profit in learning how to make the soil grow good crops. If farming is ever to reach the place which it should occupy, it will be where the children have been taught, its usefulness and beauty in the school room. The work of Professor Hunnicutt 1r *o simple that even a teacher, who is entirely ignorant of the theory arid practice of farming, can use it with profit to his pupils and himseif. Many book3 have been written on agriculture, but they are all more or lees treatises on agricultural chemistry. This work avoids this channel, but at the same time adheres strictly to sci entific truth, while expressing it in plain language. It teaches the history of agriculture, treats of the composition and kinds of [ soil, their preservation and improve l ment; how plants grow, the proper j use of manure,i and fertilizers; the se- I lection and planting of seed with the ! needed preparation of the soil for their reception; the cultivation, gather Nothing like fruits and vegetables for summer diet.
