A- H. BAKER REPLIES
TO ACT OF COUNCIL
WELL KNOWN PLUMBER WRITES
CARD. PLACING HIMSELF IN
CORRECT POSITION.
Editor Nows: If you will kindly
allow me a short space in your valu
able columns for the benefit, of those
concerned, I will reply in part to
that portion of your publication of
council proceedings August 13, which
refers to an action taken by the sani
tary commit tee. In regard to a cer
tain sewerage connection made at
No. Gloucester street some months
ago. To start with, it is a very hard
matter to make any one understand
who is not in a position to ktnow,
the different grades of the sewers on
each street that, what a difficult prob
lem we have to copo with in making
house connections and how we have
to disregard the ordinances, where it
Is Impossible to bo governed by it.
Take for example, the connection re
ferred to. No. Gloucester street.
The “Y” should have been located
directly in front (as it happened) of
the house which was to be connected
could not he found, although an ex
cavation was made ten feet long and
l ight, fiast deep. Upon consulting our
inspector wo were permitod to make
connection possibly eighty feet fur
ther up the line, which as a mailer
of course lessened our grade to a
considerable extent. In regurd to that
portion of the plumbing ordinance
which states that all connections at
the end of terracotta pipe shall he
34 inches under ground, will say that
not one lias ever come under my ob
servation nor do I believe that one
earn he found In the city. The small
settling of certain portions of ihe
above house drain referred to were
occasioned no doubt by Ihe refilling
of the trench to get proper grades.
It Is true that this portion of the
work was finished after night, but
was done eolely for the purpose of
restoring to the owner the envenience
we had deprived h.iiu of hi the morn
ing. The leak referred to was not
a sewerage leak, but one in the ar
tesian water supply to tank, which is
liable to occur in any pipe with a
pressure on it. Had an order been
left at my place of business, stating
the character of work, 1 would have
been only' too glad to make any and
all corrections necessary. 1 believe
that uiy many customers will bear
me out in the statement. 1 will state
further, in justice to myself, that we
tiave been in the pluniabiug bus-in# 9
for eighteen years and have lUnu
plumbing in title finest anil most costly
houses in Glynn county, including
.leykl Island cottages and club house,
wherp wugk was subjected to the
most rigid inspection of New York
plumbing exerts, sent south for the
purpose.
(With due respect to all parties con
cerned, I must declare I hat we arc
(at least) perfectly competent of
plumbing any yard closest in the city
ol' Brunswick.
Thanking you for your space, l am
Very respectfully,
A. H. BAKER.

And therefore let’s be merry.”
Though Pate may spill some milk,

But granting that there were no more,
Why growl about our lot or
Feel sore distressed since milk at

But likes the fruit he’s getting.
So let’s be wise in our affairs,
