If lies were lognl temler there would bo many millionaires. The voters of Georgia will rebuke the members of the prison commis sion. Watch it. Kentucky’s motto: "Whenat nothing else you can succeed, try, try Caleb Powers again.—Rome Tribune. General Clement A Cans, t.,c bravo old rate soldier, is a member or the prison commissi, General you are In a bad crowd. Mrs. Myrlck thinks Judge Lynch could do some business in Milledge vllle. The Judge has handled people for less crime than Itiute Aiiagood’s "Wouldn’t a public diensston he tween John Temple Graves and Presl dent Roosevelt on the lynch law (|ues Hon," asks The Richmond Times l)is patch, “draw a crowd about now.” The new Pope's imlspositi,,i, s„ enrlv In tits career as pontiff, will doubtless he utilized by an eor respondens as a fruitful source c.r stories concerning the "alarming con dition of the Pope” whenever news is scarce King; Edward has cxtnblUvsliod a pre cedent in tlu> recognition of tin* press by issuing a letter expressing his ap preciation of the work of the news paper men who accompanied him o his recent tour ni Ireland H> thank: th<‘in tor the excellent reports of tie tour mid commends them for the tact lul and unostentatious way in which they carried out ther difficult work. In Cook cunnty, Illinois, they have a law which requires the owners of property to haw all the noxious weeds cut and burned after tdays' notice If it be not done within the time limit the laird High Wood K.xtormi nator throws a gang of men into the lot. the weeds are cut and burned, and the owner finds the cost assessed against him when lie conics to pay his taxes. The law might work to advantage in some other places. The Charleston News and Courier well says that Hurt is no question where the blame ef all the present unrest aud ttuhatipy condition between the races in this country is to he placed. It belongs to the president himself. The pity of it is that there is no way by which lie can he ini pressed with the folly of his insam trilling wth the most serious prob lem with which any people haw cur had to deal. "CONTRACTING” ALDERMEN. In a card inThe News of yesterday Alderman du Bignoti sail: "An alderman can now nuke a con tract with the city to firnish sup plied of ail kinds, uu aide: mao can, it seems, contract io do ail kinds of repair work and fui nish material of every description, which is dog done every day, and V"i n i do not iieur one word from anv x.nr'iee." Who are the aldermen thus violat ing the law? If there are aldermen who are mak tug contracts with the city they should not he aldermen. The News will look into the matter at. a future day--- :t near future, too. REPORT OF THE COMMISSION. We have read with a great deal of iiilen | I :ißi<l disgust, too—the re port of the prison commission in re gard to l he whipping of Mamie PeCrls, and the more we think about the mat ter tiie more disgusted we feel. The blood of any person who lias a spark of manhood toils when he reads tills weak report of the men Georgia has named as the prison commissioners. It is, absolutely, worse than no report at all; it is adding insult to injury. It is a disgrace to southern manhood and citizenship. “Mamie DeCris a designate charac ter.” 1 I Poor, fiail, half crazed girl, “a des Ifforah* rharacler.” Tin* inshlunt “clos- j mI” and I la* paojdo of Georgia must , sit idly by and allow thin hoard of polith-al schemers to “close” a crime which would make the prison officials of darkest Russia bow their heads in shame. The poor, half starved woman lashed 'by a burly brute, who would squirm and cry for mercy should he have to face a man. And the prison commission “closing” the case. Hut Geort'ia possesses newspapers, and through this (hxl send the people have boon able to learn the facts of the crime, and they will remember those facts when election day comes. KEEP HIM OUT. It would pay this country to sub scribe liberally to induce somebody to take charge of Prersident Koosevelt. and keep hinuout of the negro question and some other matters peculiarly af fecting the south, tie comes into these things like a blacksmith undertaking to regulate tin* cost Heat and most in tricate and delicate nuaehnery.* The situation in the south has been worked out. but it has employed tin* thought and care of the most astute and sub tle intelle. ts guided by the most hired, intimate and profound know ledge of the conditions during thirty years. We are working out towards a solution. Here in the midst of it t onnts the well tineiatning. courageous, thick headed marplot, probably with the best intentions n the world and with sense enough in deal ing with, subjects on which lie is in formed. and deranges and threatens everything, lie ca.n undo the work of \ears with a single thrust of an awk ward and misguided tongue. With a ingle li.-edy act lie can throw out of gear a whole section of carefully regu lated social machinery Cant some body persuade him to keep his hands and feet and tongue and pen on ground with which he is familiar? And if he can not avoid interferences with us down here, lot him interfere with caution and some modesty, as ho comes his ignorance, and concede that the people of the south —some of us at least have some conscience and some sense, as well as he and his Brook iyn ami Boston friend, and more know- Imtge of tins special matter than tlie> < uid have possibly.
