By His Expressed Wish the Body Will
Probably be Burled Beside
His Wife, Although Gov
ernment Objects.
London, Aug. 22.—Lord Salisbury
passed away tonight at 9,05 alter an
illness of some time. The distin
guished patient had not regained oou,
seiusness during the entire day.
During the evening and until he ex
pired h,e lay as though dead. The end
came most impercepitably.
Some time ago Lord Salisbury ex
pressed a wish that he be buried be
side his wife, and while the govern
ment will probably request that, the
body be laid in Westminster Abbey, it
is more than likely that the ex-prem
ier’s wish will be observed.
The attending physician announced
early this morning that the patient
would hardly live through the day,
and his death was no surprise.

New Cruiser Was Suc=

Yesterday
CHRISTENED BY MISS HANNA
Thousands Gathered at Cramps Ship

Into the Waves.
Philadelphia, Aug. 22. —In the pres
nece of on© of the largest and most
distinguisded crowds that ever throng-
Cramps' shipyard o a like occasion,
tjb'o United States armored cruiser
Pennsylvania was launched today.
Miss Quay, daughter of United
Status Senator Quay broke a bottle of
American champaign on the cruis
er’s bow and said: “I christen thee
Pennsylvania.”
On the christening stand was a dis
tinguished party, the conspicuous fig
ures including Governor Pennypacker,
Senator Quay an a a number of other
eminent representatives of the state
from which the big cruiser takes its
name, Secretary of the Navy Moody
and a delegation of naval officers from
Washington, and many other promi
nent guesfla.
It was a fete day at Kensington, as
all such occasions are. Grouped about,
the wliSrves and dotting the Deleware
for miles arund were craft of every
description, from local excursion boats
to foreign steamers.
The launching was carried out with
out a Witch. It was half past noon
when the last shores were knocked
from the ways and the colossal vessel
began her brief journey preparatory
to taking her maiden plunge into the
deep. As the marine monster glided
gracefully down the greased cradle
after the proverbial bottle of wine
had crashed against her bow, the.en
thusiasm found vent. The crowds in
the yards roared anti screamed, the
party on the christening stand waved
hats and cheered, and the boats on the
river added their whistles to the gen
eral din.
At the conclusion of the ceremonies
luncheon was served in the mold-loft
and a numoer ol felicitous speeches
were made, among the speakers be
ing Governof Pennypacker and Secre
tary Moody.
The Pennsylvania is regarded by
naval experts as a marvel in the an
of marine architecture. She is class
ed as a first class armored cruiser,
.sfie na.s been likened to a uai fu sm.
possessing a protection of armor only
a little under the weight of that de
signed for the huge ships oi the Geor
gia class, while she is superior to all
uattlesbius in point of speed.
The Pennsylvania is to develop a
speed of 22 knots, waicn is a na
lion ol a knot more than the best Per
formance of the fast Hying Brooklyn.
The Pennsylvania has length on Un
load water line of 502 feet and her
extreme breadth at load watoi line
is about 70 feet. Her mean draft is
about 24 feet (i inches, but. when she
is loaded to her fullest capacity and
the bunkers a-ix.- all tilled with coal,

-water. The total coal bunker capacity
is tons. The vessel will he P i| j

inch guns, in pairs, in two electrically
controlled, elliptical, balanced turrets
having inclined points plates. On the

perstructure four six inch guns wiii
be mounted on spousons. each having
an arc 01 lire of about i4 degrees. On
the main or gun deck there will be
ten six inch guns in broadside. Eigh
teen fourteen p lunders breech load

machine guns, and six autimatic guns
of small caliber, together with four
pounders in the military tops and two
three inch field guns, will constitute
the battery of small guns,

New York, Aug. 22. —With the first
gray streaks of dawn this morning
New York harbor far down as Sandy j

early hour the entire harbor was
dotted with craft, ranging from the
tiniest of napthas to great ocean
liners, and even the casual observer
might have guessed that this was the
day for the great international yacht
ing contest, testing, as it were, the
yachting powers of the contending
forces of the old and the new country.
The early hour dawned as beauti
fully as one could wish; Old Sol shin

freshness of the morning air was
punctured with a southeast wind,
blowing at the rate of about ten knots

the sky as blue as the designer oi

As tlie early morning hours passed
on the southwest wind* increased in

estimated that the wind was coming
and going at a speed of 17 knots per
hour.

Tlie Pilots returned yesterday from
