WHISKEY IN THE SOUTH. A revision of opinion Is due among the ue \* paper editors and other cut izons el the north, says Iho Washing ton Po-st who have for years been nursing the notion that the resident of the south is in his normal mood and condition only when on inti male terms with tho seductive mint julep or omo oilier form of intoxicant. Novelist. . magazine writers, news paper correspondents, and raconteurs have loft a fixed ionpressio-u that, a )H>rtion of eaeii southern gentleman's c.iy is leiigum devulevi to a \.. jul I'ft'un to encourage tae output ul the nation'% distilleries, the famous oi which are located ia the south ljuu l- „ i ... . in view of this l'aise education, the conn try will, no doubt, i>e .surprised to ioo-rn that there are J.UUO morn fealoou* ru .New York city alone than there arc in the entire south, and that, il tlie Juwor class of negroes bv. wiimi.i.lwd the . v-h j\ •.UKV Soil l* me lit is stronger in the south than in any other section oi tho country. The New Yoiee, a leiuperuacc oi gmi, I'nriushes the following summary of the liquor regulation laws m six of the southern states. Teyae—One hundred aud thirty six counties have toitai piohihiilou* tixlj two counities have partial prohibition, and forty-six counties have unrestrict ed sale of liquors. Tennessee—Out oi 5.500 cities and towns in the state, only eight have unrestricted sale of liquors. In only twelve of the ninety-six counties can whiskey lie sold legally. Kentucky— Forty-seven I counties have total prohibition; fifty-four have partial prohibition and eighteen have unrestricted sale off liquors. Arkansan—Forty-four counties have total prohibition, and twenty-nine have unrestricted sale. Mississippi—Sixty-five counties of seventy-live have prohibition , and ohi of. two iegiviaiors ail but a dozen or less have siguilied their approval of a referendum for slate prohibition Georgia—One hundred and three counties out of IX7 have prohibition. It is interesting to note in this connection that Kentucky ami Ton ncseee, the homes of the largest dis tillery of (.lie country, have adoptee exceedingly stringent laws relative to the bale and consumption of in toxicating liquors, and tho New Voice is authority frir the assertion that the laws in the south are much hotter enforced in this respect tlian-in some of the New England states,, where prohibition laws have been on the statute books for half a century. The entire Minth, according" tortile New Voice, is tending toward a stricter enforcement of %s laws regu lating its liquor tragic while in the northern states particularly in the large cities there arc constant, iricreate in drunkardnoss due to lax enforcement of the laws upon dwell era in the tenements, “can rushers" and the lawless classes that emigre gale ini the hoodlum districts. In tho south the 1 letter class of citizens , always in l lie majority, make a special effort, to prevent the sale of l!quor~to tho negroes and in districts where excessive drinking is almost invaria bly followed l.y an outbreak of lawless" ness. The report furnishes abundant evi ilemco that, tho south i;i meeting an other problem, ns difficult of Snlu Hon as the race question, with ef fective intelligence It 5 to he hoped that the city council will lake some decisive ar fe‘lfug l^Rrnw *n! gffH' mtiter Is a mooted owe land should he deci -led one way oir tho other. If the food you eat fails to give strength to your body, It is because the juices se creted by the stomach and digestive organs are inadequate to transform tiie nutrient prop erties of the food into blood. That Is Indigestion. The system ts deprived of the amount of nourishment required to keep up the strength, and the result is that one or more of the delicate organs gradually grows weak, and then weaker, until finally it is diseased. Here a great mistake Is made. That of treating the diseased organ. The best doctors In the land make this very mistake. Why should they ? It is so easy to scs that the trouble is not there. Kodol Cures This famous remedy puts the stomach and digestive organs in a healthy condition so that rich, red blood is sent coursing through the veins and arteries of every muscle, tissue and fiber throughout every organ of the en tire body, and by Nature's law of health, full strength and vigor is soon restored to each. Kodol cures indigestion, dyspepsia and all stomach disorders. I have taken Kodol for nearly two months after each meal and it is the only remedy that gave relief from the terrible pains 1 endured. After a time I would take it but once a day. and now. while 1 keep a bottle handy I seldom need it, as it has cured me. Mks. J. W. Coolbaugh, Milo Center, N. Y. Kodol Digests What You Eat. There was no fiinching, though the blood was seen streaming out of the scuppers. Priests went up and down under the hottest fire, crucifix In hand, confessing and absolving the dying. But the engagement from the first preserved the same character whirr had been seen in those which had pro ceded it. The Spaniards’ courage waf useless to them. Their ships could no( turn or sail, their guns were crushed by the superior strength of the English artillery, they' were outmatched it practical skill, and, close as the ships were to one another, they could not once succeed in fixing a grappling IrrA in an English rigging. Thus, while their ow n losses were terrible, they could inflict but little in return. They had endured for five hours to be tom to pieces by cannon shot, and that was U.— Spanish Story of the Armada.
