A Richmond paper suggests that thiO name should be changed to slauwhtormobilo. The river front looks lively again and the old familiar song of the la borer is again heard. It is hard for a news|>aper to live when lliere are so many subscript ion “dead heats’' in a community. The gentlemen who are to erect a summer hotel iu litis vacinity cor. talnly know a good thing. The (ail oiid of (he storm which did soi much damage in Florida has paid some parts of this state a visit. Editor Vaughn, of the Millodgevillo Nows, believes in having a lively timo and lie generally holds up his end. Next year is to be one of perpet ual politicos, it. is safe to p resilin' • lull business will be at a standstill. Quite a. number of people have left Brunswick recently but they will all return. This has been the ease here in the past. The now call England's King “Ed wind tin- Peacemaker." It will take peacemaking for a thousand years to atone for the Boer war. The stem has been hovering in our vaclnity for the past several days undecided whether or not to pay us a visit Notwithstanding the fact that he lias “ten aide lawyers” if there is any justice In South Carolina Jim Till mart will suffer. Debs says: "Populism is an echo of (he past" toi which the Columbus Enquirer Sun adds" Mr Debs is him.self an echo of the past and ought lo know The school children are now gel ting ready for the fall work and we look for one of the most successful terms in the history of the schools We are told that Brunswick is to have the usual number of fall wed dings. We are glad of this and hope we will have another "epidemic" of marriages. , W,e have not heard from or of our friend Senator Mcl,auric lately. He evidently meant what he said when he remarked “back to the farm ” Those who are at the head of th. steamer line on the Oeumutgee are having hard luck but we share their opinion—there is money to be made there. AN AfrMY OF LAWYERS. It is probable that no man who has ever before been treed tried in South Carolina has such an array of law yers to defend him as has Tillman, says the Chicago Chronicle. Imme diately on securing the change of venue to Lexington, the defense, hired five lawyers of the Lexington bar, in fact nerly 81l of the local talent in the little town. Tillman will go t< trial therefore defended by ten law yers. He Is a lawyer himself and takes an active part in his own de fence, while Senator Tillman, who prides himself on being a better law yer than most of the practioncrs, will sit in the case and make suggestions. During the first month after the trial statements were freely made that Tillman would never be puished and a white man cannot be convicted hut those predictions are no longer to be heard despite of the advantages the defense gained in the last two legal skirmishes. a THE “IOWA WAY.” The following from the Savannah News demonstrates the lowa way of settling the race problem: “The ‘conservative citizens' of the pretty little city of Waterloo, la., have given notice to the colored residents therof that if they value their lives and limbs they had better get out of the town and that P. and. q. "The roprt says that the negroes are obeying the order with alacrity. “There has been no assault or no lynching In Waterloo. “So far as the report goes, the ne groes have been behaving themselves quite well indeed. But the ‘conserva tive citizens’ of the place do not like them and will not have them around. “That Is ono way the north hart of solving the race problem and it is proving quite popular in several nor them sections.” And tills in the north where they love the negro so.
