T.,e News Publishing Ompaßy de sires It to be distinctly understood that all legal advertisements must be paid for In advance. We cannot af ford to devote our space to such ad ▼ertlsements and wait on the courts ’e' the money. The Tillman trial Is set for to tnorrowi Curtis Jett has been sentenced to hang on December 18. i Washington is to get lively again. The Roosevelt r e to return tomorrow, They say that Senator Morgan is the youngest old man in the country. There Is more truth than poetry in the Jokes on women and tho bargain counters. Wo are sorry that Stove Postell was defeated for a .place In the Atlanta city council. It Is rumored that Emperor Frances Joseph la soon to abdicate. Yea, when he dies. Every man In Georgia should lend his aid in tho enforcement ot tho game and fish laws. Put your advertisement where it will be road by the buying public. That pleaeses The News. The chilly weather we had some days ago makes the rajs of Old Sol tho harder to stand now. Tho Atlanta police department is luefore the public eye. We are some sorry for the Atlanta people. Chicago was an hundred years old yesterday. The largest and handsom est. century plant in the world, too. The Goolot wedding rather evens up. She gets the ltoxeburg and ho gets the iw.li.sbag. Ring oft please. The Augusta Chronicle issue this ultimatum to the liquor dealers of that city: "UOycolt and be damned, all of you.” The race question is worrying the people of other sections a great deal more than it is us. We have other things to occupy our mind. Editor Mercer, of Fitzgerald, had a little stojoet duel some dhyp ago but it was a duel of the right sort — neither participant was injured. The vagrancy cases are to come up In the city court and we will now hear what the local attorneys think of the new law. An edvertiser who does not want his name mentioned told a News re porter yesterday that his ad. in this paper had (paid him over a hundred per cent. The average fellow that comes up and hits you on tho back aud tells you what a good follow you are, is the one that tygns the comer aud de nounces you. 1 Editor Dfitfh Grubb oonQinues ta keep a sparkling editorial column in his popular paper, tits Darien Gazette Col. Gru'ldt is one of the bzrightest mon on the Georgia press. We believe in placing credit where It properly belongs. If there is any are member of council entitled to more credit than the other ones for the saving of the trees it is Aldermen Robinson, whose minority report ap pealed to the press aud ta the people and who really is responsible for the fact that the trees were not cut down. IF MCKINLEY HAD LIVED. If McKinley had lived the nation would have been spared many a vex ation. His tact, his regard for the feel ings of others, his good humor, his freedom from the spectacular, hi.• old fashioned way of dealing with his fel low-wen guided his own bark over many a shoal and and shallow, even as they were, piloting the nation into smooth water. Mr. Roosevelt upon a melancholy occasion at Buffalo, pledged himself to the carrying out inf the policy of the dead president. He vyae sincere. No unpredjucided observer can in the least doubt but that President Roosevelt entered upon his duticci with a lofty purpose in view. Buit, he has failed to come up to popular expectation, and his blunders have shocked friend and foe alike, but it ail has been because of a lack of expert<nce, rashness and and a cocksuremess of opinion. The wisdom of the American pool pie in, selecting presidents of age and recognized level headedness lias been more than vindicated and it s lkie ly that the experience of Mr Romae velt will -tan alone in American his tor. Judge Ti or, chairman of the pris on board l.as been over to Eatonton, "explaining the prison system of the state.” Strikes us that he has all kindfi of “explaining" to do between the present time and election day. The cassava experiment did not turn out well for the farmers of this sec tion. What these "Sons of the Soil?” want is something that requires no work in the planting, harvesting or gelling. The papers in this circuit are throw ing some pretty boqueslls at Cal. Max Isaac on his appointment as referee In, 1 lilaulsruptcyl T|liHh brainy young taiitxurnry deserves everything good said about, him and we may go fur ther and uav—more. Mb. Max Isaac, a well known at totiuiey Of Brunswick, has been ap pointed by Judge Emory Sipoer, as referee in bankruptcy to succeed Judg Q Crovatt, resigned. Mr. Isaac is now the youngest judge in Georgia as well as on® of the best lawyers. The Breeze tenders congratulations to the Judge.—Douglas Breeze. Horn. Max Isaac, of Brunswick, has boon appointed referee in bankruptcy to succeed Judge Alfred J. Crovatt. Judge Speer could not have done bet ter. —Baxley Banner. Considerable talk lias been indulged in lately as to the inefficiency of the Brunswick telephone exchange and it has beou asserted that certain in dividuals have been to Atlanta and “officially" complained to the manage ment on the poorness of the system in this city. Neither the board of trade, the city council nor the coun ty commissioners have ever taken act ion on the subject and w'e are at a loss tp understand who was repre sented in this official reiwurt to head quarters. Asa matter of fact the ex change at times lias been a little im perfect in its workings, but on the whole the service lias been fairly good and Manager Haley at all times gives prompt attention to all complaints lodged wiith him. The summer outing of the Roose velt family cost the government sev eral hundred thousand dollars but ttiink of the good time the children had. While The News Is full of ads. from the Brunswick merchants iliis morning, tv did not find them at the (l<x>r when we came down yesterday. No. Indeed, they were hustled for, and while wo have three or four ex- tra pages we could have easily accom molduftod limit many -mure. At ,the same time none were left hanging on the outsido of the chase when the foreman made up the last forms this morning. Distress After Eating Cured. Judge \V. T. While the general opinion of those supposed to Ik* authorities on this mat ter has heou that the habit and drinking ■water at meals is a deleterious one, it la now stated, according to recent in vestigations, that a little water, if not too cold, is beneficial, as it assists in "the digestion of food. A too copious supply of water dilutes the gastric Juice, and if too cold it lowers the tem perature of the stomach below normal, thus impairing digestion, if. however, water is takeuiu limited quantities. tb peptones formed o.v the action of gss tric juice on food .it he washed as'.ce, thereby facilitating absorption. By tin t means the undigested food is iuia bare and is more susceptible to further cv . lion of the gastric juice.
