PROMPT TRIALS
The grand jury of Newcastle county
Deleware determined, after full con
sideration and deliberation, to throw
out the hill of complaint filed by the
authorities against eight persons de
emed of participation in the lynch
ing of the negro White, who was
burned at the stake last June because
of his outrage and murder of a white
girl.
One of the jurors has stated that
it was the almost unanimous agree
ment. among them that only les
son to be drawn from the affair by
the authorities was the necessity of
providing for speedy trials of sueh
cases as the one which provoked the
mob’s vengeance upon White. As for
himself, the juror declared that "the
man gwt onjUy whalt the deserved'. I
would take part in the lynching of
sueh a brute.”
Of course, in the face of sentiment,
like this, there is not the least p*
slMOlty efj the oonMtituted authori
ties bringing punishment tc the sell
.constituted executioners of a wt 010
people’s wrath
The expression of the juror shows
how completely the crime of the ne
gro against women stands out front
till others of the code. As furthei
evidence of tills, a recent expression
of Bishop W. M. Brown, of Arkansas.
Is interesting, the bishop said: “It
is true that I do not justify lyuchings
1 can find noi other remedy adequate
tui suppress the crime for which this
hfl& been made a punishment by the
people of the south. 1 am a northern
man and used to look with horror
on lynching, but, since I nave boon
south my eycn have been opened
Imprisonment does no good.”
There Is no doubt lml that, these
are the thoughts in a great many
communities where the tiegroe’s crime
Is committed. It is not a matter of
tho south or the north or any other
section, noir is It a matter of theory.
Tho case now on trial at Lexington
tn which Jim Tillman is charged with
tho murder of Editor Consol os is at
tracting wide attention—perhap more
than the recent trials in Kentucky.
These cases aro similar in many res
pects, including the fai t that tho ju
dicial machinery oif the state is to
ho tested, as it were. There are per
haps few who believe Tillman inno
cent, yet public opinion thinks that
ho will go unpunished.” If this s
the result South Carolina juet as well
abolish her courts
