Tty* New York political situation
Is badly "mixed."
They the acre and now
Jump Crolvatt because it is I hero.
Pile slate is making -1 strong case
against Tillman and big conviction
seems certain. ,
• U would take every paper in the
state to elect Joe Turner whi n when
he runs for prison commissioner
The Tampa Tribune says "News
pa ers started for political purposes
never amount to much."
It is certainly a sad state of af
fairs when children have to be turn
ed from the public schools' because
there Is no room for them.
Wie suppose that the ring up n
Atlanta Is going to back Comnilf ei.
er Turner and It Is one time “wo
won't do a thing" to that crowd.
They start, the political ball 10
rolling by persecuting Mayor Crovatt
but they will find that this will not
win votes. The people believe in fair
play.
Msnsfiehl street lias certainly been
treated to some good work. Tlio
fact that our schools are on this
street should cause us to keep It in
the very licet coaiditions at ail times.
Special programs have been ar
ranged at some of the churches today
and as the weather is delightful all
tlha lilouses of worship should li|ive
large congregations.
The Macon Telegraph lias taken a
heavy load on its great and expan
sive shoulders when it begins to tote
and defend Prison Goimmissioiier .100
Sid Turner. The people of Georgia
will have had enough of that learned
and dignified gentleman’s dictation
"lien his term as prison 1 commission
or expires.—Americas Times Itecor

DESERTING THE ARMY.
General McArthur, commenting on
the numerous desertiolns from the
army, declares that desertion is inci
dental to human nature; in other
words soldiers desert without flmy
oilier than that they want a change
of air, liberty of movement etc. Gen
McArthur overlooks entirely tlio fact
that it is not human nature for a
healthy man to lie content with tlio
common army rations.,
before the canteen was abolished
the profits of the canteen were li
Idtd among the messes and the
ordinary bill of fare of the soldier
was supplemented by many appcUz
illg articles of food. Now the sol
diers must lhe on rations, and it is
hard fare, we are told.
When a man has hut three things
to and—work, exit and sleci> —he lays
more stress on what lie has to eat
than does a jiersim having a variety
of occupations or distractions. Food,
which by its crudeness and sameness,
gets so that it is repulsive to the
taste, the soldier deserts if he can
B*4 the chauce. This much id hu
inau nature.
A STRENUOUS CURE.
The onion cure is anew fad la
the north and doctors have discov
ered that by the heroic use of the
humble yet strenuous bulb they c'in
break up a cold
Taking the victim of a cold m
hand they give him for breakfast a
poached egg on toast, three table
spoonfuls of fried onions and a cun of
coffee. Luncheon of sandwiches
made of Boston brown bread, butter
ed and filled with finely chopped raw
onions, 'seasoned with salt and pep
per, mnkiyi Iho second meal of the
schedule. For supper the onions may
be fried as for breakfast, and eaten
with a> chop or baked potato.
To our mind the cold is not half
so bail as the remedy.
SAVANNAH’S GREAT FAIR.
Tbe Savannah Industrial and Agri
enltnral fair will begin on November
14 and continue for ten days.
With a splendid manifestation of
public spirit and enterprise the busi
ness men of tile Forest city have
contributed both time and means for
Ibis great, event aind the result is
that it will lie one of the greatest
events of the kind ever held in this
state.
TTie fact that, it is a South Geor
gia should cause the. people of this
and surrounding counties to do everv
possible thing for 'its success.
We should have an exhibit there
and it would he a great thing to lie
represented In large numbers of our
people who should attend this groat
fair.
THE COMING CARNIVAL.
The carnival commiltoe of the
hoard or trade has announced Mon
day, October 12 as the date of the
carnival.
On this date Ihere will be excur
sions from along tbe lines of the var
ious railroads and it is expected that,
a largo number of visitors will come
hero from all sections in the southern
portion of the state.
Wie should all cooperate with each
other to the end that this affair
lio made a success. The people of
this city shomul get better acquaint
ed with those who live on the rail
raiad lines mitering BrtwifiWlck. More
especially is this true of those who
reside In tho section iraveraed by
tbe I’. & B. and A. & B.
This is practically anew country

CASE OF JEALOUSY.
The New York Sun wa.a responsi
ble for the story that President
Roosevelt refused to attend Hie ex
ercises at the opening of the Pity
College, of Now York, because for
President Cleveland was to lie pr< s
oivt and make a speech.
The president has thought the mat
ter important enough to require a
IJormal denial of th* Sun's stotry.
In its report that the president
refused to accept the invitation on
account oif t,l fm-t that Cloveired
would bo there the Sun said:.."Polit
ical wise men who were at the St.
lands oxiwsttion cerenionies said Hint
