THE WHITE PRIMARY QUESTION.
A meeting of the white tax payers
of the city of Brunswick has boon call
ed for Thursday night to consider the
nomination of four alderman on the
white primary system.
Without regard for tlie origin of this
move euul caring not where it eman
ated, we would like to ask why is it
necessary in Brunswick?
Here we have a population of colored
citizens, who from the st outpoint of
good citizenship, will measure up wiili
those of any city in tlio south. Those
among them who register and veto
are taxpayers, men who are interested
in the material growth and prosperity
of tlio city, property owners who
have a deep interest in the w’ll being
of the eominnuity.
The state of Georgia has not found
it necessary to enact any disfranchise
ment laws agninst tlio negro, why
should we of Brunswick take it up
and th usdeprive this class ihe privi
leges he is justly entitled to exercise?
We are not threatened with negro
dooninancy here in Brunswick. There
is not a negro in any official position,
however remote in tho entire county.
There is not and has never been
any linos or denmu cat ion an between
democrat and republican in our local
affaire, ;uul wo bare cm more than Olio
occasion elected republicans to the
mayoral it ,\ and to places on the alder
imiiuic board as well as to official pos
ition in the county.
With these conditions we cannot
for the life of us sis; why they should
be changed. \\v should encourage the
negro anil educate him as to the du
ties of cilizeucship, rather l Li-eii take
a right, which under ail the laws of
the land Is his,and thus engender bad
feeling, which at this time certainly j
does not exist to any great extent in
this community.
If it could l>e made,.to appear that
the negro was encaged in a move
to dominate the affairs of this city,
we would be among the :~rst to raise
our voice in defence of any movement
to check and keep him in his place,
such is not the cage and we really
see no good reason, cor departing from
custom that has been In vogue in this
city for at least a quarter of a eemtury.
Those* who favor the white prlmarv
assert that It. will ston vote buying
If the custom of vote buying really ex
ists In Brunswick, cmd |t certainly
should not, , if. is very doubtful if a
wliile primary, will stop it al! together
Ko, as we ’ay, we are ronton* to let
