Why don’t the Good Govern ment club pull down the candidates? The Riflemen's fair is a move in the right line and should be supported generally by the people of Brunswick. Tlie present campaign will lie at tended by a number of mass meetings and the political orator will be uu hand loaded. Thus far in the month Brunswick's shipping recoird has been decidedly above the average and indications are that it will break all previous records. Under the above caption tile At lanla News prill!,, the following sensi ble editorial: ."In a recent summary of the con ditions surrounding Arthur I’. Gorman as a candidate lor the presidency, The News mentdomed, among other incidents, the statement made some time ago that lie was a member of good standing oi the Catholic church. "A friend ,f Senator 111 i mail, writ ing from Maryland, hogs to correct the impression, and affirms that the senator lias always uoeu a member of the Protestant evangelical churches. "it really does not make any dif ference to thoughtful people what Sen ator Gorman's religious affiliations ma v be, if lie believes in God and the con stitution of hi.s country. it is only the narrow and fanatical who would lie iullnenced by the cur rent of religious belief in the man who was presented for a purely secular office. There are good men and true men and patriotic men in all denoini tions and ill all churches, ind as our contemporary of the Montgomery Journal well says, Americans vote ii their public servants not because they are Presbyterians or Catholics, Jews or Episcopalians, Methodists or bap tists, but because they are able, hon est competent. •'The last two decades have seen more Presbyterian presidents than in the whole previous half eeuturv of the government. But the polity of this government lias not beeu Presby terian. either in the appointment to office or in any other way of that religious denominations. “The mention of Senator Gorman s religion was one of the many items of interest connected with the man who occupied for the time being the cen ter of the stage, it is always inter esting to know the details of a life that may be linked with history, >’ LV J.
