Too bad something came up to bring
back old steel plain memories.
The little ones will soon begin writ
ing their notes to Santa Claus.
Let's get that refining plant. Bruns
wick cetainly needs such idustries.
Brunswick's oyster factories must
lie doing an immense business. They
seem to huve all the bivalves In this
section.
Prom all accounts it does seem that
the presidential bee is buzzing around
Mr. Hanna's ears, which is no doubt
slinging Roosevelt.
The Savannah Press thinks that if
royal princesses of Europe continue
I u I'uji away with thftr eoacliuion the
klugS mav soil out their staoles and
buy automobiles.
The Rome Tribune thinks "What a
pity Mr. Roosevelt wasn't president
in 1801, instead of Abraham Liueoiu.
We would have been spared the terri
ble war ot secession."
Brunswick seems determined to get
tihal money appropriated by congress
tjfxl on ilie baj'. We have had
more trouble in .spending tbe money
than we did in securing it.
Plenty ot good Georgia syrup, sugar
cane 'pusum and laters," game, lisb
*uut oysters, a matchless winter cli
mate, with sunshine all the year round
no soaret-tever, typhoid or other ma
lignant disease in our midst, south
Georgia iu general and Brunswick in
particular, is good enough tor us. Take
her all around, we haven't touud a
plate yet that combined all of liruus
iwiek's advantages. Where there is
more money, there is apt to ho some
thing else wrong, either iu point ot
hoalthluiuens, climate or something.
(Brunswick pegs cheerfully on. hold
ing her own as one of the prettiest amt
most healthful and delightful old
•owns in the country.
SOME SHIPPING STATISTICS.
In the local columns of The News
this morning will be found some ship
ping statistics lVom the Manufact
urers' Record, the most reliable indus
trial magaaino in the country, which
should afford immense satisfaction to
the iH-ople of this city,
These figures show that in the past
twenty years in the matter of increase
Jn exports and imports of the seven
teen largest Atlantic and Gulf ports,
that Brunswick is in the third place,
being exceeded only by Newport News
and Pensacola.
Again, in the ratio to population,
for the last fiscal year Brunswick de
feats Pensacola and falls into fourth
place, being outclassed only by Gal
veston, Savannah and Newport News.
Considering the fact that Brunswick
lias a less population than any of the
ports, the record is certainly a splen
did one and indicates that wo are
peeping pace right along with the lar
gest ports In the country.
These figures are all the mure cheer
ful to the average Brunswiekiau when
it will be noted that a number of our
old-time rivals in the shipping in
dustry have not only fallen behind us,
but show actual decreases in the vol
ume of commerce. . -
OUR WOMENS' WORK.
The strenuous efforts ot a few of
Brunswick's public-spirited ladies to
save our public library from passing
into the region of things that were, are
certainly deserving of warm praise.
The energy and enthusiasm fit wom
en are largely instrumental in main
taining our churches and our
charitable and educational institutions
all over the country, and the women
of this city are always foremost in
work of this sort.
In the face of grave obstacles, con
tending against a deplorable lack of in
terest in the library, the ladies of the
association have labored to keep it
alive. They have succeeded only by
the hardest work. They have labored
faithfully, undeterred by the difficul
ties in their path, with but little en
couragement even from the reading
public.
They now hope to move the indebt
edness and in la short time to have
the library in more suitable quarters.
The directors and association should
receive warm encouragement and sub
stantial aid from the public generally.
To have the pubic library die of in
attention would be a serious reflect
ion on Brunswick people. Such an in
stitution should berwell supported and
its flourishing existence a matter of
pride to our citizens. Everybody in
Brunswick should subscribe to the li
brary and in that way help to main
tain it. If every citizen was a sub
scriber the library could be kept well
supplied with the latest hooks, could
be removed to better quarters, could
afford many improvements now im
possible.
Let the people of Brunswick encour
age the library and assist the iadies
In their noble effort to keep it
open and get it into a better
condition. There is no betttr field for
public-spirited endeavor than this.
GET TO WORK NOW.
The civic league is losing valuable
time in the matter of improving our
squares and parks. This organization
strated out with a great deal of enthu
siasm and life but it seems to be
threatened with an attack of that inov
table paralysis that in time overtakes
the majority of such institutions in
our town, that fatal sluggishness 0
inertia which awaits our *■
ors lor the welfare of BniiM| ||
The ladies seem interested and eu
erergetie hut the’ complain that they
receive little cooperation and encour
agement from the men and the public
generally.
We hope the civic league will take
on new life ami continue the spleudid
work already,
work already begun.
If eggs continue to go up we are
afraid eggnog will be enjoyed only by
the rich Christmas.
The New Orleans Picayune cannot
endorse the isthmian affair, hut is glad
to get a canal. New Orleans will be
the basis of supplies and, when the
canal shall have been built, it will be
the coming commercial metropolis
of the Uuiou, second ony to Now
York. __
