Uongresmau Newlands waiil.i t unnex Cuba provided Cuba wants to be annexed. During the farewell tour of Patti . good many Americans are saying farewell to their dollars. The football season is now over and nbout a half doaeu teams in the south are claiming the championship. The New York American notes the fact that 1904 begins on Friday. He spectrally referred to President ltoose yelt and the O. O. P. ______ "'At last," says a republican con contemporary, “the isthminu canal 1 in sight." And In smell, says the Tampa Times. The more you do for some people, nd organization*, tho less they up predate it. Especially is this true in Bfiift&wick. A Kansas City bank has recent l> made a specialty otf school children's savings and reports already $20,000 deposits from this source. The vear 1903 will d'e in just thirty days and the Jacksonville Metropolis asks: What have you done during the dying year to totter yourself and others? A till to protect merchants and traders from oppression by •trusts' *nd combines- has been introduced liv Osoar W*. Underwood, a represent alive in congress from tbe Ninth Ala bama district, having at heart the true interests of all merchants and traders. Asa matter of course tho trust organs and barons laugh at the proposition. It will never become a Jaw-. * * ■ * WELL', WE GUESS NOT. The esteemed Chattanooga remarks that the transfer of the ne gro, Crum, from Charleston to Host ton “would please both cities." Not so. (It Is true that Charleston would he pleased,) but Boston would “raise a howl," Just as Boston did in the case of the negro, Lewis, in cun ie -Pen with I the assistant district, attrorntyshlp, I and Boston’s “howl' would of cour.t have far more Influence witti the a<l ' ministration than aa J ? general |,la test from the citizens of Charleston against having themselves saddled I with a negro appointment. It de pends largely upon what direction the protest comes from. Public opinion hi Boston on this question Is largely what it is is in Charleston. The north has far less use for the negro than has the south In the abstract all manner of views about the negro emanate from Boston but when a practical application of these views are threatened, Boston is usually heard from. And Boston does not want negroes to fill important fed eral offices in that city. Furthermore the negro runs afoul of a serious boycott in Boston when he seeks to get work, while he can easily get a job in the south. The transfer of Crum to Boston would simply mean another strong protest from those who pose as the friends of the negro until he is thrust upon them in an official capacity, or until his efforts to get work he enters into competition with white men. AN HONEST MAN. We wish the world had some more men like Dr. Ludwig S. Filbert, of Philadelphia, in it, says the Jachsom ville Metropolis. It would make peo ple happier and better, and save them from hating and censuring for finan cial crashes. He had Induced many poor people to invest in the asphalt trust stock, thinking It a good thing. They put their all in it/lioping to rea lize big profits. But ala3 for human expectation, the trust burst. Dr. Fil bert felt responsibility keenly. He had lost a million and a half. Finally, lie called the members of his family together and said: “I am getting old and cannot live many years. I want to be prepared to meet my God without the cries of hungry women and children in my ears. It will cost me half a million dollars to repay all these poor people for ilie losses they have sustained in this miserable stock luiiure. This money will come out of your pockets, since you will be deprived of it alter my death. But 1 think 1 can lace death better with an honest name, and that is my reason for asking you to uphold me." lie paid every cent due those he had influenced to invest. He drove from lluuse to house and handed each the amount due them, and when all had ben paid, he said: "My con science is clear. 1 can now die in peace." Dr. Filbert has set a splendid ex ample but how many are there who fVlll follow it in this day of greed and avarice? There is not more than one such a man in a million. Brunswick seems to break a record of some kind every month. Safe bloweus are now busy in the south, and Savannah and a small city in Florida have both been victims of their work during the past few days. The difficulty automobilists find in protecting their faces lias at last been satisfactorily solved, says a Pnris dispatch to the Now York Her ald. Tgly masks and goggles are now likely to be cast aside for anew mask which is strong and transparent aud modiues in now way the appearance exf fair complexions. It is constructed of transparent horn, with the usual spectacle glasses, and thus obviates the danger of fire, so much feared with inflammable celluliod masks.
