The democrats want to see Toddy
nominated by the republicans. He
would probably bo the easiest mark
tor the democrats to defeat.
Brunswick's shipping record
as the record made in the handling of
freight cars will open the eyes of
many southern ports. And they won

Mr. Bryan has written on to make
an engagement for an interview with
Count Tolstoi. It is possible that the
count's flowing beard has mislead Mr.
Bryan into, jumping at conclusions as
to the count's politics.
A restaurant keeped in Chicago kill

cause the latter lacked 5 cents oit hav

cheap, indeed, in the Windy City.
It is to be hoped that thte city au
thorities will resume the work on our
streets early next month as has been
promised. The city government can
not do anything that will be more
appreciated by the tax payers.
Senator Hanna has refused a ban
quet tendered him at which Pres
ident Roosevelt and his cabinet were
to have been present, and the Colum

Hanna do 6 not propose to be caught
napping.
Why Is there so much discourage
ment In the republican party? Why
is it that so many republicans, in
cluding not a few who are more or
less prominent in official positions,
are despondent over the outlook for
1904? We give out no secret, nor do
<w stretch the truth in the slightest
degree, when we assert that a feeling
of gloomy apprehension is more com
mon among republicans than cheer
ful con3dence. —Washington Post.
Ah, those scandals and corrupt meth

Jacksonville Metropolis
THE RIGHT OF HOPE.
John Uri Lloyd, the author and phi
losopher. whote a splendid article on
things we should be thankful for, and
put at the head of the list of blessings
“the right to hope.”
Was there an empty chair at your j
table Thursday? Did you miss a face
that had smiled and a voice that was
rich in delight? Were there tears mix
ed with your Thanksgiving, because of
an empty place in the family circle?
Maybe it was lather’s chair that was
empty. There were tears in mother's
eyes as she carved the turkey, for it
was her first effort, and she couldn’t
help thinking of the strong man, who
laughed and joked as he did that same
j duty only a year ago. Perhaps she
| was thinking that there are plenty of
I good things this year, but there may
!me little save bread next year. Be
good to her. Let every day until
next Thanksgiving ha lull of effort to
keep strong in her heart the Right
to Hope.
Maybe that empty place was broth
er’s, and fathers eyes were moist and
his face pale, as lie absent-mindedly
offered that vacant chair a heaped-up
plate of good things. A whole lot of
things like ambition, promise, self
satisfaction, went out of his life when
brother died, and he, too, needs his
Right to Hope.
Most likely it was baby’s high chair,
lor the grim destroyer’s greatest har
vest among the little ones. Did you
remember bow the little curly-headed
darling use to look, perched up there
in its clean, white bib-and-tueker, its
eyes rolling with astonishment at the
steaming dishes crowing softly and
sweetly with Its spoon in its mouth,
king or queen of the feast, through its
innocence? Did you see mother lean
over that empty tliorne of the missing
king or queen?
She believed that while the worms
and mold down in the cold ground
were doing their work on the wee sofi
hands that had petted her cheeks, and
the little feet that had pattered
through the. house, up here above
somewhere, her darling nested, warm
and happy, upon the great breast ol ,
One who cried out: “Suffer the child
turned from reacting that cry To read!
ye become but as onej
of heaven,” aifd she bu3'’“h#r illgfit tyj
Hope.
Perhaps that empty chair was moth
er s. Ah! then you must needs have
nil the earthy blessings which God
has left you, to enoble your right to
Hope to 1111 that vacant place.
Surely, Mr. Lloyd was right in nam
ing the Right to Hope as man's great
est blessing. No thief can steal it. No
legislature can legislate it away from
you. Time or moth or rust can not
destroy it. Cling to it. Nourish j
Thank God for it, you may even find
it a spring of cooling drink in the
boundless desert of earthly loneliness.
Cleveland',s announcement that lie
will not, by any means, accept the
democratic nomination, puirct’.eallv
puts Goman in* foremost mm for th?
democrats to decide upon, and it is
generally believed that the Maryland
senator will get the nomination. A
better choice could not be made.
There are 25,000 Italians iu Now
Orleans anil 60,000 iu the state of
Louisiana, including their children,
and there is not a pauper among them.
Nor do they crowd into the towns like
the other immigrants. Alone among
the foreigners landing at New Or
leans they go to the country iirsi
and work on farms. in the parishes
they are rapidly crowding the negroes
out ol uie sug r destriers iu southern
Louisiana. t
The Presbyterians of Brooklyn, N.
V., want tbo people of that city to use
their endeavors to have Senator
Smoot , of Utah, expelled from the
United States senate, and to have the
federal constitution amended so as
to define legal marriage as mono
gamic, and make polygamy and poly
gamous cohabitations under every
guise and pretence a crime against
the United States. If agitation will
do it, polygamy will toon be dead.
