Dend Elkß all over the country will
lie toasted by their living brothers
tomorrow afternoon.
President Arkwright, of the At
lanta street railway, would receive the
unanimous vote of the people of that
iclty for being "a warm member."
Keep up the improvements on the
streets of the city. There Is no bet
ter way on earth to spend the public
money.
This evening will mark the close
of the Riflemen s fair which seems to
bave been a success financially and in
every other way.
The Wayeross Journal says that
the A. A B. is going to scoop the Sea
board Air Line. That is about as
plose to things as the Journal gener
ally gets.
In the death of A. E. Wenz, which
was chronicled in the News yesterday
Brunswick has lost owe of her most
successful and highly esteemed young
business mne. To the grief stricken
members of the family we extend our
deepest condolence.
Those of ihe people uf the city of
Brunswick who own town commons
property and have made improvements
thereon should read the platform of
the Citizens club published in the
News this morning. The placing into
effect this plank of the platform
may serve to save some of the proper
ly owners their possessions.
The farmers institute which comes
to this city next week is a matter of
deep concern to the people of this sen
atoriai district and it is to be hoped
that It will have the earnest co-opera
tion of the farming imprests of the
three counties. The board of trade
has with commendable pride appoint
ed a committee to look after this mat
|*r and the people of Brunswick
should aid this committee in It* work
GOOD TICKET, GOOD PLATFORM.
The ticket nominated and endorsed
by the members of the Citizens club
at the mass meeting held Wednesday
night is a good conservative one and
the platform upon which they stand
is one that any good citizen can, with
impunity, embrace.
It is clean, rtear cut and defines a
code of principles that if placed in
to practical usage must in the end re
bound to the betterment of the city
both individually and collectively.
This platform is of special interest
in so much as it declares for the
renewal of all leases now held by cit
izens generally to the town commons
property and further it sets out that
those cf our citizens who liave im
proved these town commons property
ought not to lose the amount thus in
vested, but should he given anew
lease for a full term of ninetynine
years, as provided for in the leases
now expiring.
This is a matter of deep concern
to a certain class of the people of this
city and those who own towD commons
property should look closely into tire
matter.
The gentlemen, who have been en
dorsed by the Citizens ciub are to
well known to the people of Brunswick
to need any introduction at our bauds
and we merely say that they are
among the most successful, prominent
and conservative business men of the
municipality, men who in their own
individual affairs have been success
ful and men who may be depended
upon to do likewise in the affairs of
the cily. They aie not politicians,
belong to no local political faction
and liave only one great cause at
heart—the materia! advancement of
the city of Brunswick.
Need more be said of them?
GOING THE LIMIT.
There Is a good opening for trouble
among labor unions in Philadelphia,
and the result may be revolt, rebellion
and several other things tending to
put ginger into unionism. Somehow
it came to the kowledge of certain
unions In the old city where brotherly
love is supposed to abound that a
member had allowed his own wife to
help sole the seat of his trousers, she
not being a member of any union. The
offending member was even rebelious
enough to say that his wife should
recognize and rebuild his breeches just
when she was willing.
Here was disloyalty iuslde the camp
with a vengeance, for don't you see
tehre are union tailors in Philadel
phia whose business it is to make and
repair clothes, and it is rank and man
ifest disloyalty to let any one that,
it is nothing short of heresy for any
union man to allow work done for
him by any but union labor, or to
claim that a non-union female woman
lias a right to sew- patches on the .seat
of a union man’s trousers.
But the member didn't even stop at
this act and defence of disloyalty. He
told an assembled union that if he
saw proper to do so he would hang
wall paper in is own house if he felt
disposed. This is worse and more
of it. It is rebellion among the elect
and in the very heart of the camp.
No union man lias a right to do any
yvork outside his regular trade, either
for himself or for others. There are
plenty of union paper hangers who
only charge twelve hours' wages for
eight hours work and they must have
all jobs of that kind. If this man is
(Allowed to have his way where is
the stopping place? Unionism will be
deader than Potiphar's wife.
But we are curious to know where
the limit is to be located, if the wife
may not put on a patch may she sew
a button on his pants, or must he fas
ten them with a nail? And has the wo
man of the house liberty to bake
bread for the family if there are un
ion baiters? May a man shave himself
or may the wife trim the childen’s
hair while there are union barbers?
is not the whole thing fast running
mto the region of the absurd? We are
curious to know r what the Philadel
phia unions propose to do with this
recalcitrant and what he 11 do. There
may he fun ahead.
