The people of this city will today elect four members of tho city council who will servo In thut capacity for a period of two years. All of the candi dates on the respective tickets are among the most progressive ariu high' ly esteemed business men of the city and the election of either ticket will insure the people of Brunswicck u very able and a very intellectual coun cil next year. For our part we have endorsed the ticket nominated by the Citizen's club and we call upou the people of this city to vote for it. Not that we have ought to say per sonally against the good gentlemen named on tho other side, but as a re buke to the presentt party dominating in the city.which to our mind has been the bitterest from a partisan standpoint, that this city has ever seen AVhon the members of the city coun cil are so blinded in the local polit ical situation, that they deprive the mayor,(who chanced to be elected on an opposing ticket) of appointive pow ers in small matters, that have rest ed with that office for years ai .1 ea.s we submit that the common cause is suffering for the sake of small politics. We repeat that we. are opposed to one mian rule in the city council and any citizen who is posted in the matter will agree with us when we say that for two years past one indi vidual has been the dominating spirit of that body, and through this influ ence the doings of the council have been po small and so partisan as to make the ordinary citizen blush with shame. Witness, if you please, the petty, small mock trials of policemen last winter, the election to office of men not in the slightest fashion Quali fied for the poskoos all because of how the several parties In question voted. ; t Those and innumerable other oc currences of a like manner have been the cause for the espousal of the cause of the Citizen's club. The white primary was a delusion conceived in the minds of a few Good Government club politicians who have succeeded in persuading some of our beet people that ft is a move back ed by sincerity. Asa matter of fact' It Is a small political fake and If the people of this city were as familiar with the origin and the facts under lying it, they would spurn it as we are doing. When it is necessary to disfran chise the negroland we do not believe it ever will be) let us hope that the act of disfranchisement will not be administered bv a band of office hold ers and small politicians. There is no occasion for a white primary here in Brunswick and no one knows it more than the crowd of politicians who are fathering it. Our negroes are good ones, who are not clamoring for dominancy and who are willing to let the white man rule. So we say that this effort to array class against class is unfair, unju. and almost criminal and we h pet; people of this city will go to the polls today and vote for, 0. Downing, Duncan Wright, Geo. R. Krauss, J. Basil Davis. A GOOD MEN HAS FALLEN. The grim Iteaper is no respeetor of persons, It comes in the nightime of sorrow and care; it comes when Iho sun shines brightest, when skies are bluest and when the birds are tuned to sweetest chords. The inscrutibllity of the Omnipo tent, the fortunes of fate and the un certain things temporal are a triumvir ate that, must and will forever baffle tho philospber, the seer and the wise I!.an In the death of Dr. Hugh Burford, that genial gentleman, deep Rtudent and ardent friend to all, Brunswick loses one nearest and dearest the common heart. * For years and years he has been with us, administering to onr ills, coming at onr call, let conditions he as they may. It mattered not at what hour of the night, or from whence came the call, he responded with his splendid ability. The lowly and hum ble laborer Is quickly answered as was (he man of a affluence and affairs. It was not a matter of mercenary con sideration with Dr. Burford, but rath er one based on the purest principles of humanity. His sudden death has spread a pall of abject gloom over the entire city and from the very bottom of our heart we extend to the members of the family our truest and most sin cere sympathy. We of this calling are always expected tet felicitate with those who are happy and to condole with those who are burdened, but in this case we claim the right as his friend to lay at his bier this token of our esteem and love for him. There is a vacuum in the hearts of tho people of Brunswick this morn ing and one that will remain for ever a day. But to those who loved the doctor as we did, there will always live in their memory his genial personality, Ills tender ministration and his strong Individuality, that has always mndo him one of tho best beloved men in the city of Brunswick. His sudden death, in the very glow of his professional career, is nothing less Uian a municipal calamity. lias the Civic league gone into win ter quarters.
