Wo are pleased with the fact and hog
to congratulate those of our business
men who have aided n the movement.
The coming to this city of such in-,
dustries is what of all things we de
sire most. Small manufacturing I
plants, wherever they are located have
proven to be the bone and sinue of
tliose communities. They give em
ployment to both scientific and skilled
labor and bring in a class of citizenry
at all times to be desired and in many
fashions are conducive to the mater
ial growth and advancement of the
cities in which they are located.
The plant has behind it the
very best business men in the city,
men of action, ability and means and
there can be no question as to its ulti
mate success.
'At any rate wo cordially welcome
the new enterprise into the commercj a
realms of the city and wish for it
the very fullest measure of progress.
THE COLLAPSE OF ZION CITY.
Per years the people of this coun
try have observed with surprise and
apprehension the giowth of Prophet
Howie's industrial and religious com
munity known as the Zion City, just
outside of Chicago. 11 has been well
understood by level-headed persons
that the enterprise was built upon
false foundations and was doomed to
eollapse whenever the adverse winds
of fortune should hit the superstruc-
ture The c<.!taf.ut Las come now
Receivers hi tVatge of the property
and are exercising mnnagement of
the Industries upon which the peo
ple of the city have relied for support..
They are examining into conditions
of tho various itu i'.tutions and every
time they reach down for information
they come back with new revelations
of the utter rottenness of the manage
ment, the complete lack of common
business judgment exercised by those
in contract, the absolute fatuity of the
dupes who have been putting up the
money out of which this monstrous
bubble has een built.
These are days pf wretchedness
for the plain people of Zion. Des
scriptions of conditions in the uufoit.n
nate community is suffieeient to wring
commiseration even from those who
condemn the folly cf (he dupes who are
now the sufferers. Life in Zion lias
never been prosperous. Some of the
people are without the common ne
cessities of life, and are facing the
rigors of a northern winter in wretch
ed hovels devoid of the ordinary pro
tection from the winds and snow.
Some of the houses have no other
sheathing than canvass, some are with
out other rt of then c.otli, many fam
ilies are without fuel, all are short
of money, their credit, ends where the
troubles oi the management be
gins, the store checks which have
passed as currency in ihc community
are about to be “demonetized," the
Dowie bank is found to be without
funds, the candy aud lace factories
are operating at a loss and the com
plete cessation of all industries is only
a question of a short time. The con
sequent suffering of the poorer mem
bers c:f the cm Mvi 'ty will then ex
ceed that which now prevails.
lit the midst of all this wreck of
fortunes and hopes, the people of Zion
maintain their faith in Do wit 1 with a
devotion that would he sublime if it
were not pathetic and rediculous. It
is shown that the thrifty prophet has
not allowed h.tusei/ to suffer in the
oourse of all the misfortunes of his
qeople. He has taken care to feather
his own nest. All the realty titles in
Zion run in his name personally. His
wife and sou are enjoying life abroad
and are even said to have conveyed
away a comfortable supply cf assets
that will insure the family against
went regardless of the fate of tho
dupes at Zion City.
Up to a very late hour last night no
wrecks had been reported on the line
of the B. 4i B.
